Why howdy there #Checkin people! Today is World Teacher’s Day, and Taco Tuesday!

World Teachers’ Day seeks to raise awareness about the teaching profession and the challenges they face. The day commemorates the 1966 ILO (International Labor Organization) and UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) recommendation concerning the status of teachers. This recommendation sets a standard regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers.
Teaching has transformed from a simple educational function into a complex profession. The history of teaching can be traced to Confucious (561 B.C.), who was the first famous private teacher. Many ancient Greeks hired private teachers to educate their children. In the Middle Ages, learning institutions such as Cambridge University were founded and teacher training became required.
I grew up in a marginal minority neighborhood and attended substandard schools. It’s a wonder that I received any education at all. Had it not been for being an early and voracious reader, I would likely know very little. As someone on the spectrum, it wasn’t like I did that interface or participation thing very well. I tended to be a behavior problem under normal classroom situations. To say I could be disruptive at times is an understatement.
There were teachers who made a difference. One was Mr. Archibald Taylor, a dapper gentleman who taught middle school art. He arranged for me to attend weekend art classes at various sites. Looking back, it was Mr. Taylor who is my favorite teacher. For one, in art class, drawing in class was okay, something I was frequently punished for doing in other classes. Drawing made me calm, allowed me be present without too much agitation. He encouraged me to practice drawing every day, which is how I came to make my way in the world.
