Review : The Penguin Book of Dragons, Part Two
Concluding look at Penguin's summary of dragon lore, looking at how dragons have been viewed with a weird mixture of remarkable critical-mindedness (such as suggesting their fire was actually just bioluminescence) and rabid lunacy (such as proposing that horny, sperm-spewing dragons in the air are best warded off with fires of bones). Also how the dragon in St George is a rather undeveloped plot device whereas in other stories they're much more integral and symbolic, ranging from a dragon that kills people "by depriving them of wealth" by hoarding all the gold to the truly mythological aspects of dragons almost made of cloud and thunder. They're grand literary beasties indeed.
