On this day in 1938 Orson Welles's radio dramatization of H.G. Wells's War of the Worlds was broadcast, causing great alarm—though reports of a nationwide panic were unfounded—as some listeners feared a genuine invasion from Mars.
War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells is one of my favorite reads, and the 1953 movie adaptation is one of my favorite movies from childhood. I still remember the sense of awe I had reading the book, and again seeing it on our old B&W television. I was amazed at seeing it in color once we had a color TV. (The Wizard of Oz, too.) And though I think Spielberg did a good job on the remake, the earlier film version with Gene Barry and Ann Robinson is still my fave. Not so crazy about the 2019 three-part British TV drama.
