STONEHEDGE, ENGLAND

Thousands of solstice enthusiasts will engage in a range of rituals and activities to celebrate the Winter Solstice.

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England. It consists of an outer ring of vertical sarsen standing stones, each around 13 feet high, seven feet wide, and weighing around 25 tons, topped by connecting horizontal lintel stones.
(How did people build it?)
- Historically, the Winter Solstice has been of great importance to many cultures, such as Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome, often as a marker for the passing seasons, and a possible time of rebirth.
- As well as marking the shortest day of the year, the Winter Solstice marks the first day of Winter in the astronomical calendar, whilst in the meteorological calendar, we are already three weeks into Winter.
