Called Flyme Auto, the new system powers a completely new experience behind the wheel, as it brings the mobile phone and the car in total sync.
While many might consider it an alternative to Android Auto and CarPlay, it’s much more than that. Flyme Auto was developed to be deeply integrated into the vehicle, so it sports capabilities that aren’t even available on Android Automotive and the new-generation CarPlay.
As compared to its rivals, Flyme Auto is supposed to be significantly more dynamic. As such, it offers more advanced customization options, including a live desktop.
Yes, reading through the details of the article, it knocks the socks off the current offerings we have. It probably shows we needed more competition and innovation in this niche. It really makes Android Auto and Apple’s CarPlay look positively legacy. But whether we’ll actually see it is another matter, as it all depends on what car manufacturers decide to install.
So, it is possible we’ll see this new car OS on some makes of cars, but not others. These decisions though really affect end users, even to the point of deciding what phone OS they can, or cannot, use. I’d really hope it was a car buyer’s choice to specify which they’d like to have on their car, or that cars come with all three from the factory (like my own car, it has both Apple and Android’s offerings installed, which is why I chose the car).

If you regularly use Android Auto in your car, you must be no stranger to frequent connection issues. This problem usually stems from using an out-of-spec or faulty USB Type-C cable, though most people end up blaming Android Auto or their phone. However, in many cases, it can be pretty tricky to figure out if the cable is defective or if something is wrong with the car’s USB port. To make this easier to determine, Google has added a new diagnostics tool to the latest version of Android Auto.
If you do buy a third-party cable, make sure it adheres to the USB-IF standard. Don’t be surprised if the new diagnostics tool in Android Auto finds an issue with the cable you are using. USB Type-C cables can use wildly different specs, even though they all look the same, which can cause a ton of problems.

This is essentially a 7″ display which your phone can connect to via Bluetooth. The display then mounts on top of the dashboard and can be interacted with, as if you had CarPlay or Android Auto on your car’s head unit.
It will, by default, use it’s built-in speaker for sound output, but it also has an FM transmitter so that the audio can play through your car speakers (will work if your radio is so old it does not have Bluetooth, but audio may not be great). Otherwise, if your car head unit has an AUX input, you can connect a cable to that.
It’s by no means perfect, as can be seen from the review, but it is an option worth considering if there is nothing else.
Why not just use your phone on a holder? Well the screen is a bit bigger, orientation is correct, and more importantly CarPlay and Android Auto are optimised for minimal touch operation vs a phone screen interface.

For those of you who are unaware, Android Auto is an app that you either need to install or comes pre-installed on your Android (duh) smartphone, which allows you to connect your phone to your car’s entertainment system, either through a cable or wirelessly, to help make things easier while driving. You can make and receive calls, send text messages, reply to them via voice input, use navigation, run third-party apps, etc, all on an interface that’s easy to use and less distracting while driving.
My current car, a Hyundai, has a dash system which is both Android Auto as well as Apple CarPlay. It was an important factor in choosing a new car for me, as I can do everything I need to do, without ever touching or holding the phone while driving.

Android Auto allows you to connect your phone to your car to avoid distractions while driving. Here's everything you need to know about it!
Quite a clever idea to just bypass the battery and connect it to the 5V USB (assuming your phone will handle the 5V) so that the phone is always connected, and just starts up with the vehicle. It was equipped with a SIM that shares the same number so that it operates like the primary phone.
So nothing major required here apart from the tweak to have the power connected up. Perfect for that excellent old phone you have just lying around because its battery died, and it's non-replaceable.

Right now, most people use Android Auto with their primary devices, and that makes perfect sense given this is the most straightforward way to handle calls, take your favorite music with you wherever you go, and always be up-to-date with what’s happening on your phone.
