Magna’s new rearview mirror cleverly integrates a driver-monitoring system to alert you to being distracted away from the road

Magna’s solution is to put the camera into a rearview mirror. The camera and infrared illuminators are embedded behind the glass, with a circuit board containing the necessary electronics for eye tracking. And since the camera is mounted high up in the cabin and has a wide field of view, it could also monitor the other occupants if desired.

Privacy-focused readers should rest easy—this DMS (driver-monitoring system) does not record video, nor can it pass video into anyone’s cloud. All the processing happens in the mirror, with the car just being given alerts if the mirror detects the driver is looking in the wrong area for too long. (In the past, Volvo has told us its DMSes work in a similar fashion.)

Magna has signed its first customer for the DMS mirror, but until that OEM makes the relationship public, all Magna can tell us is that it’s a German automaker. Expect to see the first models sporting this mirror on the road in Europe early next year, then here in the US by fall 2024.

I’m a great fan of biohacking stats, so I’d be really interested in seeing my “alertness index” over time (if such a thing were to be available).

Tesla FSD Beta Drive From Café

This is a drive with Tesla FSD Beta (Version 10.69.3.1.) from a café in Clovis, CA. The system beeped at me a few times, as I was too slow to touch the steering wheel. At the end of the video there is wheel chair user at the intersection visible, who is recognized as “bicyclist”by the FSD Beta.

Cycling: TfL to begin issuing fines to drivers in cycle lanes | BBC News

Motorists caught driving in cycle lanes on roads managed by Transport for London (TfL) are to be fined from Monday, the transport body has said.
New powers have been given to the authority and other London boroughs to fine drivers who cross the solid white lines which mark cycle tracks.

As a driver I welcome this. But it will take a long time before most drivers know about it, and other drivers can force us to take evasive measures that might lead to crossing the line.

Highway Code: Watching TV in self-driving cars to be allowed | BBC News

People using self-driving cars will be allowed to watch television on built-in screens under proposed updates to the Highway Code.
The changes will say drivers must be ready to take back control of vehicles when prompted, the government said.

This can't go well. While driving we need to be reading the road constantly. To go from being embedded in a story to full awareness is something most drivers won't be able to do quickly enough. The car alerting you some seconds before switching to manual is one thing, but avoiding the truck hurtling over the central divide is another.
