The mother of Berta Cáceres, the murdered Honduran indigenous leader, was named one of 2019’s 10 most outstanding people in Latin America. Austra Bertha Flores Lopez, was a great role model for Berta’s humanitarianism. Austra was a midwife and social activist who took in and cared for refugees from El Salvador during that country’s bloody civil war, teaching her young children the value of standing up for disenfranchised people. She served as a two-term mayor of their hometown of La Esperanza, as a congressional representative, and as a governor of the Department of Intibucá. She’s a warm-hearted woman of great intelligence, tremendous strength and moral character. Complimenti cara Austra!
