Who needs a roof when you can use balcony solar for apartments

The photograph shows a woman standing on a balcony, holding a cup. The balcony is attached to a building with old-style architecture, featuring decorative moulding above the windows and a mix of light beige and dark teal colours on the façade. In the foreground is a black solar panel that looks almost like a privacy screen that extends the length of the balcony. Plants are visible in pots both on the balcony and in the background growing along the building's exterior wall.
Lots of people, especially city dwellers and renters, don’t have rooftops where they can install solar panels to generate some of the electricity they use in their daily lives. Community solar offers a partial solution for some, but it is not available everywhere. In Germany, more than 1.5 million people have installed Balkonkraftwerke, which translates as “balcony power plants.” Almost every apartment has a balcony with a railing to keep folks from tumbling into the street below. If it gets any sun exposure during the day, balcony solar panels can be mounted to those railings to make electricity that helps power a home.

It may not be as much power as a rooftop system but is still around 300 W which does offset electricity costs a bit, and there is a battery to also store excess energy.

What is different from a rooftop system is that it is easily portable, so you can take it with if you move, or even if you go off camping. If you live in an area subject to hail, then these are easy to take inside when you need to. It usually also does not require professional electricians to install it.

And as far as the electricity grid goes, in Germany there are already more than 500,000 of these installations, so that adds up to quite a saving anyway on the grid side.

The Most Hopeful Chart in the World - by Ed Conway

#environment #energy #pollution #climate #resources

Our politicians might not like to discuss this. But in Europe in particular, the transition depends rather heavily on buying cheap Chinese technology to enable us to meet all those mandates for green vehicles and power. We probably couldn’t afford it otherwise. And that also means depending on Chinese coal. What else did you think was powering most of those factories?

Watch online: Poisoned Ground: The Tragedy at Love Canal

#environment #environmentalism

We should never forget the brave women who fought for environmental cleanup in their community as dangerous toxic waste seeped from the ground, resulting in the EPA Superfund. With the threat of government cuts, younger people should know history, and older people who have forgotten why we have government agencies and regulations should refresh their memories.

The Hidden Environmental #Cost of #SocialMedia

source: https://greenly.earth/en-gb/leaf-media/data-stories/the-hidden-environmental-cost-of-social-media

#TikTok’s primary environmental challenge comes from its video-heavy platform, which consumes significantly more energy than text or image-based platforms. The sheer volume of videos, many of which are hosted on energy-intensive servers, makes TikTok one of the most environmentally costly social media platforms on a per-user basis. For example, streaming short videos on TikTok contributes to higher #emissions per minute of use compared to platforms like Twitter or Facebook, which rely more on text and images.

I get it, you want to create a mood for a TikTok ban for “environmental reasons”. Have you ever thought about how many emissions are caused by the consumption of porn videos? Let's just ban everything that's fun. After all, the big oil companies want to continue polluting the environment and society should focus on banning TikTok.

The question of whether global warming is accelerating is hotly contested among climate scientists. While some have argued that the current rate of warming — which hit an all-time high last year — is strictly correlated with increased fossil fuel emissions and therefore aligned with current climate models, others have cautioned that the Earth is far more sensitive to fossil fuels than previously thought and that humanity is hurtling toward tipping points from which there can be no return.

In a recent study, a group of researchers from the University of Melbourne complicated this debate with an analysis of warming rates across the globe and possible causes for regional differences. Their principal finding: The globe is getting hotter at a faster rate, but this acceleration is occurring unevenly.

Surprisingly, densely populated areas with large concentrations of poverty — megacities like Cairo and Mumbai — are warming more slowly than urban centers in Europe and North America. Why?

The researchers found that the large quantity of aerosol particles in the air of highly polluted cities reflect sunlight back out into space and, at least in the short term, can have a net cooling effect on populations.

Dear Fellow Environmentalists: Stop Talking About Climate Change

#politics #environment

If we want a thriving Earth, we should stop trying to “save the planet” in the limited ways we’ve been taught to—by repeating talking points, placing too much faith in governments, and relying on simplistic solutions. Lasting change begins with rooted principles and practices, not with force or divisive narratives. Yes, this type of transformation can take time, but when we enact change on an individual level, it positively impacts and inspires the larger systems around us. To effectively address our environmental concerns—including that of the climate—we need solutions that have deep roots. That’s true sustainability.

#5g is being rolled out across the country, despite growing #evidence that it is disruptive to our #health, our safety, and the #environment. The Invisible Rainbow is the groundbreaking story of electricity as it’s never been told before―exposing its very real impact on the #biosphere and #human health.

Over 100,000 copies sold!

Over the last 220 years, #society has evolved a universal belief that electricity is ‘safe’ for #humanity and the planet. Scientist and journalist Arthur Firstenberg disrupts this conviction by telling the story of electricity in a way it has never been told before―from an environmental point of view―by detailing the effects that this fundamental societal building block has had on our health and our planet.

In The #Invisible #Rainbow, Firstenberg traces the #history of #electricity from the early eighteenth century to the present, making a compelling case that many environmental problems, as well as the major diseases of industrialized civilization― #heart disease, #diabetes, and #cancer―are related to #electrical #pollution.
"Few individuals today are able to grasp the entirety of a scientific subject and present it in a highly engaging manner . . . Firstenberg has done just that with one of the most pressing but neglected problems of our technological age."―BRADLEY JOHNSON,MD, Amen Clinic, San Francisco
"[A] masterpiece."―Celia Farber, investigative journalist
