#ScottishPower to build £150m #GreenHydrogen plant at Port of #Felixstowe | #HydrogenPower | The Guardian

There has been a big increase in the interest of the use of #HydrogenEnergy over the past few years but it is only meaning as a combat against #GreenhouseGases if it is produced using #RenewableEnergy. Most #Hydrogen currently is produced using #FossilFuels as so-called #BlueHydrogen which is a huge source of #Emissions of #CarbonDioxide.

Global Witness Exposes The Lie Behind The Carbon Capture Scam – Shell Claimed 90% Capture But Only 39% Captured In Reality

Bild/Foto
In 2015, Shell installed a carbon capture facility at its Scotford refinery northeast of Edmonton in Alberta. According to Dezeen, the system was designed to eliminate emissions from hydrogen production. And lo and behold, Shell is trumpeting the fact that it actually captured close to five million tons of carbon dioxide over the course of 5 years. Great news, right?

No, says Global Witness, which claims the facility actually released more carbon emissions than it captured — 7.5 million tons worth, equivalent to the carbon footprint of 1.2 million cars. The greenhouse gases emitted included highly potent methane, which in the short term has a more than 80-times higher global warming potential than carbon dioxide.

Global Witness argues that this casts doubt on the messaging pushed by the oil and gas industry that carbon capture and storage technology makes it possible for hydrogen derived from natural gas to be used as a “low emissions” fuel to help the world reach its net zero goals. “Fossil fuel companies see fossil hydrogen as a way of continuing to make profits from extracting and burning fossil gas, whilst greenwashing it at the same time,” the report says.

#Oil firms made ‘false claims’ on blue #hydrogen costs, says ex-lobby boss | #HydrogenPower | The Guardian

So-called #BlueHydrogen is another scam that #FossilFuel #companies are promoting to carry on effectively as normal. H2 could potentially be extracted (more) sustainably but the infrastructure isn't there yet.

Theory Versus Reality: The Dirty Hydrogen Story - Researchers at Cornell and Stanford say the promise of “blue” hydrogen is a very costly lie

The hydrogen myth refuses to go away. The theory is fine — hydrogen when used as a fuel produces no carbon emissions. At most, it results in some water vapour and a little heat. If the world ran on hydrogen, the theory suggests, we could slash carbon and methane emissions and maybe forestall the existential climate crisis that is staring us in the face.

The reality is very different. According to the New York Times, a peer-reviewed study by researchers at Cornell and Stanford has been published in the journal Energy Science & Engineering which finds that most hydrogen used today is extracted from natural gas in a process that requires a lot of energy and emits vast amounts of carbon dioxide. Producing natural gas also releases methane, a particularly potent greenhouse gas.

"Further, our analysis does not consider the energy cost and associated greenhouse gas emissions from transporting and storing the captured carbon dioxide. Even without these considerations, though, blue hydrogen has large climatic consequences. We see no way that blue hydrogen can be considered 'green.'"
