Hubble saw an individual star 12.9 billion light-years away, a feat only possible because there is a ginormous galaxy cluster in between us and it caused gravitational lensing. I think the word "ginormous" is justifiably used here. The ginormous galaxy cluster is called WHL0137-08 and the more distant galaxy that got smeared out by gravitational lensing into a long crescent called is called the Sunrise Arc, and the individual star was seen in that smeared out galaxy.

#astronomy #cosmology #GravitationalLensing #DarkMatter #Hubble An article published in the journal "The Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society" reports a solution to an astronomical mystery involving two #galaxies that appeared to be mirror images of each other and turned out to be two images of the same galaxy doubled by a gravitational lens.
