Tearing up the Human Rights Act would have “dire consequences” including removing obligations to properly address violence against women and girls and destabilising peace in Northern Ireland, more than 50 organisations have warned.
In a letter to Boris Johnson, Amnesty, Liberty, the British Institute of Human Rights and others have spelled out the “significant implications” of repealing the act, which is expected to be announced in the Queen’s speech on Tuesday, asking for an urgent meeting to discuss the plans.

Human Rights Act could be scrapped by UK government

Sources suggest Dominic Raab was appointed as the new justice secretary because of his opposition to the Human Rights Act.

In video footage from 2009 – uncovered by Labour’s David Lammy – Raab says:

• “I don’t support the Human Rights Act and I don’t believe in economic and social rights.”

Raab has a long track record of criticising the Human Rights Act (HRA), which he has described as “feckless” and “undemocratic”.

He championed a failed attempt to replace the Act in 2011, and criticised its “continental approach to rights”.
