The US carried out a strange chemical explosion (US media calls it "high explosive") at an underground nuclear test site in Nevada shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a triple nuclear warning, raising questions as to what exactly this secret US weapon was.

The Americans have leaked that it was a "means of detecting nuclear tests by other countries" but the Russians believe the Americans were testing a new weapon of "mass destruction".

Moscow has called for an international investigation to determine what it was that was tested in Nevada.

The US Department of Energy said the purpose of the test was to assess its ability to detect underground nuclear explosions and to support efforts to "develop new technologies in support of nuclear non-proliferation goals".

The department stressed that chemical explosives and radioisotope trackers were used to conduct the experiment, which took place in a special underground tunnel.

The explosion was monitored by a network of seismic and ultrasonic sensors.

Concern is widespread throughout the planet because now, in addition to the nuclear 'arguments' from both nuclear superpowers, there are concrete actions.
