..."FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 2, 2024

People Power United declares that #MAGA #Republicans are relentlessly attacking reproductive freedom, undermining the rights and autonomy of millions of Americans. Their harmful agenda puts personal medical decisions in the hands of #politicians, stripping away essential #healthcare and endangering lives.

In response to recent MAGA shenanigans to harm Americans, People Power United - a progressive grassroots group - issued the following statement:

“We must stand united to protect reproductive justice and preserve the rights of all people to control their own bodies. There is no power like that of the people, and People Power United stands ready to protect our communities against any and all injustices,” said Laurie Woodward García of People Power United.

People Power United will continue to oppose such harm to our community and champion civil rights for all.

#ActionAlert: Tell your member of #Congress to co-sponsor and support the Freedom to #Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act
Together, we can realize a #democracy that represents, reflects, and responds to all of us.

..."Together, we can realize a democracy that represents, reflects, and responds to all of us. For far too long, special interests, ultra-wealthy donors, and vote suppressors have dominated our politics and attempted to silence the voices of everyday Americans, especially in Black and Brown communities. The Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would help shift power away from bad actors and transfer it to “we the people.”

Can you take 1 (one) minute to write a letter to your member of Congress asking them to co-sponsor and support the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act?

Specifically, the Freedom to Vote Act would:

Respond directly to new laws around the country aimed squarely at making it harder for people to vote--which will disproportionately impact communities of color--by setting commonsense standards for safe, convenient practices like early voting, automatic voter registration, and vote-by-mail.

Protect the integrity of our elections by adding new safeguards against election sabotage, such as partisan efforts to remove local election administrators and harassment of poll workers.

Ban gerrymandering and prevent states from adopting congressional maps based unduly on voters’ political party or race.

Reduce the power of special interests in our elections by shining a light on secret political spending and getting big money out of politics.

Specifically, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act will restore the full power of the Voting Rights Act by:

Establishing new review and approval criteria for preventing racial discrimination in voting.

Requiring federal review of specific voting practices known to have been used to discriminate against voters of color.

Mandating greater nationwide transparency of voting law and policy changes.

Reinforcing voters’ ability to challenge racial discrimination in court.

Allowing voters of color to challenge voting changes that worsen their position.

Giving the U.S. Department of Justice more authority to investigate voting rights violations.

Expanding courts’ roles in protecting voting rights.

Expanding the federal observer program.

If enacted, the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would be the most significant, comprehensive anti-corruption and voting rights bills in generations. This transformational legislation is essential to counteract the many voter suppression and sabotage laws recently enacted in at least 20 states. Reforms in the bills are popular, and many of them are tried-and-true solutions that have passed in red, blue, and purple states."...
