Demystifying the USB Type-C connector: A talk from EMF 2022 by Tyler Ward

A presentation slide showing a USB-C port in the centre surrounded by all the othe rtypes of connectors that it ha sreplaced such as USB-A, dsiplayport, lightining port, charging port, audio socket, serial port.
The USB type-C connector has become the universal connector for modern devices. It is able to transmit USB, video, power, and more, often doing several of these at the same time. All, while maintaining backwards compatibility with older hardware using relatively simple adapters.

This talk by Tyler Ward explores the methods used to make this possible and the consequences of not following the spec (e.g. Invalid charging cables, or the issues on the Raspberry Pi type 4). Some basic electronics knowledge will be beneficial to understand everything in the talk, but definitely not essential. For those looking to start using the connector in their own projects, the talk will give the knowledge to do so.

My old China-made USB-C hub (who always got rather hot) gave up after 2,5 years. I needed to go through 5(!) replacements, before I found one that worked like the old one. Even one from Anker - a brand I usually have good experiences with - didn't work the way I wanted. It always turned out to be a problem with the cable-bound mouse that made problems. After returning the first 2 replacements, I was fed up and orderted THREE others, in the hope to find one that works the way I want.

What made it special was that I wanted one with audio support. That is not very common, to start with. With two of the 5, the audio interface didn't even show up on my Macbook. Three of the 5 had problems with the cable-bound mouse, not recognizing it at all. Only two of the 5 did everything right, and I took the liberty of returning the more expensive one.

The one I chose works fine, and has a more spacious, aired chassis, so I hope it does not get too warm. Even so, it has one problem: The "mute" button on the Mac gets ignored. BUt since it is hooked up to an amp anyways, I can use the amp's mute.

Super.

Endlich.
