Apple's new M3 products push the emerging #Arm #PC sector to the next level, but the cheapest #MacBook in the lineup is a $1,600 #notebook with only 8GB of unified memory. Many consider 16GB the current standard and arguably the minimum for intense workloads, but Apple thinks its RAM is different.

I'm also wondering why 8GB of RAM on a MacBook costs as much as 32GB on a non-Apple #laptop?

My old China-made USB-C hub (who always got rather hot) gave up after 2,5 years. I needed to go through 5(!) replacements, before I found one that worked like the old one. Even one from Anker - a brand I usually have good experiences with - didn't work the way I wanted. It always turned out to be a problem with the cable-bound mouse that made problems. After returning the first 2 replacements, I was fed up and orderted THREE others, in the hope to find one that works the way I want.

What made it special was that I wanted one with audio support. That is not very common, to start with. With two of the 5, the audio interface didn't even show up on my Macbook. Three of the 5 had problems with the cable-bound mouse, not recognizing it at all. Only two of the 5 did everything right, and I took the liberty of returning the more expensive one.

The one I chose works fine, and has a more spacious, aired chassis, so I hope it does not get too warm. Even so, it has one problem: The "mute" button on the Mac gets ignored. BUt since it is hooked up to an amp anyways, I can use the amp's mute.

Début février, j’ai publié une série d’ #articles sur l’ #installation de Linux sur du #matériel #Apple obsolète dans l’optique de lui refaire une jeunesse, notamment les vieux iMac et les vieux #portables #MacBook. Or, il peut arriver dans certains cas de figure que la machine refuse obstinément de démarrer un #support d’installation Linux.

Mac-User anwesend? Ich hätte da mal eine Frage…

Am Wochenende hatte ich versucht, auf dem etwas älteren #Macbook der Tochter meiner Freundin #Plex zu installieren. Zum Glück. Denn nun weiß ich wieder, warum ich #Apple so hasse: Die nehmen einem einfach die Möglichkeit aktuelle Software zu benutzen! Der blöde Kunde muss wohl neu kaufen, oder wie ist das gedacht?

Für OSX El Capitan ist kaum noch etwas verfügbar: Firefox, Chrome, Opera? Pustekuchen! Safari ist anscheinend sogar zu blöd die plex.tv Seite korrekt anzuzeigen. Plex gibt es anscheinend nur als etwas älteren Download von irgendwelchen Drittseiten. Leider will die runtergeladene Plex-Version nichts außer Musik anzeigen und ich habe Filme.

Kurz: Trotz langer Frickelei habe ich es nicht hinbekommen. Ich bin so kurz davor auf dem Ding einfach ein Linux zu installieren.

Aber vielleicht gibt es hier ja einen Mac-Fan, der mir kurz erklären kann, was man da macht. Also, wenn man nicht direkt OSX platt machen, sondern erhalten will. Wobei ich mich natürlich fragen muss, ob der Mist überhaupt noch sicher ist.

Vielleicht gibt es aber ja Möglichkeiten, die mir nicht bekannt sind? Zum Beispiel für ein OS-Upgrade. Oder zumindest, um halbwegs aktuelle Software zu installieren.
