Think of it as a free, fast and secure open-source alternative for LinkedIn or XING (remembering that LinkedIn has featured plenty of times as the number one collector of user metadata, even above Facebook). This is one of the very few fully open source alternatives to LinkedIn. It is designed around speed and lack of clutter, so it is suited to slow network speeds.
Your profile consists of job experience listings as well as tags to identify your various skills. Users can follow and vote up those specified tags.

There are no status update posts, and also no user to user messaging, so this keeps everything very focussed and spam free. A profile can optionally publish an e-mail address, and have links to other sites and to social media accounts, as different ways to contact a person.

It’s not all perfect though as some concerns are the last code submit was 17 months ago, and users have been asking for a proper listing functionality for certifications and education, along with books / papers published, and also for Mastodon accounts to be linked to profiles.

SpaceHey is a retro MySpace (THE pre-Facebook) clone focussed on privacy without algorithms

Created by a young German coder identifying himself as An the Maker, SpaceHey is a faithful recreation of the spartan social experience in the early years of online media, triggering nostalgia in some users and curiosity in others. MySpace was the most popular social service on the web before Meta Platforms Inc.’s Facebook surged ahead.

Part of the attraction may be explained by the absence of intrusive advertising and big corporate overseers. SpaceHey promises “no algorithms, no tracking, and no personalized Ads – Feeds on SpaceHey are chronological and there is no suggested content begging for your attention.”

It is a centralised model (not peer-to-peer or federated), and although it uses some open-source libraries it does not appear to be open-source itself. The blogs, groups, and forums though are publicly accessible to read without login, so this is great for bloggers. Blogs also have RSS feed links, which is useful for replication elsewhere, or for followers who are not on SpaceHey.

This project really exemplifies what I believe should happen to Meta / Facebook too (the use of interoperable standards). Users should be able to opt to use free and open source self-hostable alternatives that can still keep them in contact with their family and friends that choose to stay behind on a platform. It's the best of both worlds for the individuals, and also means they can more freely move to another platform without being locked in.

Fosscord is free, open source, extendible, self-hostable, decentralised, themeable, secure, encrypted, and compatible with Discord... It's going to be better than Discord! Right now it is still a work in progress, so not everything is fully in place.

Cyberpanel is a free and open-source alternative to cPanel and similar panel management servers. The linked video shows how to start from scratch with a $6 pm VPS on Digital Ocean, but you could in fact use any VPS or other hosting, and just install CyberPanel.

CyberPanel includes all the tools you need to set up and securely manage one or more WordPress websites. It is a bit weaker than cPanel/Webuzo/Softacluous as far as including installation scripts to install lots of other applications. But this does not mean you cannot install them yourself, there are just no one-click installation scripts to do that. For example CyberPanel's site has a blog post showing how to install Drupal too.

Friendica is a decentralized open-source social network which federates with many other social networks including diaspora*, Hubzilla, and the Fediverse of social networks. It can mirror too with Twitter and IFTTT, or export posts to Discourse, libertree, Tumblr, Wordpress and e-mail.

When you think of messaging apps, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and any of Google's 47 attempts likely come to mind. As mainstream as those services might be, they aren't the only options you'll find for texting your friends and loved ones. Viber isn't as recognizable a name, but it's been quietly popular for years now. Today, it passed the one billion installs milestone, marking its place among other ultra-successful apps like Google Messages and Snapchat.

It installs on Android, iOS, MacOS, Windows and Linux. Unlike Whatsapp, it will also work even if you don't have your mobile phone with you. Communities can be created with unlimited members. All Community members’ phone numbers are hidden (unlike Signal).

But you need to be aware that there is advertising that funds this service, and associated cookie tracking. This is basically what Whatsapp wants to introduce, and also Telegram at some point. There are some opt-out options, but ads will still be delivered. Their cookies policy goes into a lot of detail about this.

Both devices keep the asymmetrical design popularized by Amazon’s Oasis e-reader, offer E Ink Carta 1200 screens with Kobo’s ComfortLight Pro feature (which adapts the screen brightness and color based on the time of day), and add Bluetooth support for wireless headphones (though they can only play Kobo’s own audiobooks).

The Sage is the larger of the two and also functions as an e-note device. It’s compatible with the company’s Kobo Stylus (sold separately for $40), which lets users make handwritten notes on ebooks and PDFs that can be can converted to plain text. With an 8-inch (1440 x 1920) E Ink display, this makes the Sage smaller than Kobo’s dedicated e-note slate, the 10.3-inch Elipsa. It’s also cheaper, too, as the Elipsa is priced at $399.

15 file formats supported natively (EPUB, EPUB3, FlePub, PDF, MOBI, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, TIFF, TXT, HTML, RTF, CBZ, CBR), and OverDrive for public library ebooks.

The grommunio project functions well as a drop-in replacement for Exchange. The developers connect components to the platform the same way Microsoft does, and they support RPC (Remote Procedure Call) with the HTTP protocol. According to the developers, grommunio also includes numerous interfaces of common groupware such as IMAP, POP3, SMTP, EAS (Exchange ActiveSync), EWS (Exchange Web Services), CalDAV, and CardDAV. With such broad support, grommunio integrates smoothly into existing infrastructures.

There are a variety of usage models, from paid support with cloud hosting through to community free options. Remember though that payments is what keeps the project innovating and improving. Self-hosting will also help achieve full data sovereignty, and with Linux being used as a hosting platform this also provides a lot of flexibility and scalability.

Once again, a lot of effort was made to make the LibreOffice office suite more compatible with proprietary, closed-source formats of the Microsoft Office suite, which still use a deprecated ISO standard that contains a large amount of hidden artificial complexity, causing all sorts of issues.

Writer gets bibliography improvements, label and business card paper data for Japanese users, better support for merged cells in the Word-compatible table border painting, improved PDF exports for documents containing links between anchors and footnotes or endnotes, and support for list format strings in ODT files.

For LibreOffice Calc, there’s the ability to filter by color in AutoFilter, support for captions in HTML tables listed in the External Data dialog, mixed date format for cell format in Japanese locales, support for the Kahan summation algorithm, ‘fat-cross’ cursor in the options, and the ability to select the type in “Moving Average” trend lines.
