Emilia (and her kittens)
Emilia had to be a mother very early. Already at the age of about 7 months she had offspring. She raised her kittens at our shelter and prepared them for the wide world. The offspring has moved out in the meantime and now it's time for Emilia to be the center of attention. She never has to have offspring again and is now allowed to look for a home of her own. Yes, it is true that black cats have it harder when it comes to adoption! A recent study has named 3 reasons for this. 1. People think that black cats are less friendly and more aggressive. 2. People are superstitious. 3. People think that they cannot read the emotions of black cats. The best way to find your next cat without reservations is to go to the shelter and meet them eye to eye, because sometimes you will be surprised which cat will choose you. They know best!
The intention of my posts is not to find people that adopt those pets. This German animal shelter accepts only local adoptions and has a very good placement rate. My intention is to raise awareness for all those beautiful pets in the shelters out there waiting for you to be their hero. Go to your nearest animal shelter to find your new pet. Adopt! Don’t shop!

Junes
Another kitten born wild and caught with the live trap. Trying to get the feral cat population under control is like fighting windmills. Just one unneutered cat, can quickly undo the work of years. Reproductive cats can have four to six kittens each two to three times a year.

Pearl
Pearl was caught by shelter volunteers as a small kitten on a nearby farm using a live trap. At the shelter she was then vet checked, neutered, vaccinated and after a quarantine period finally advertised for placement. So she is spared hunger, disease and annual offspring. Of course cats can survive as strays if necessary, but they are pets and not wild animals.

Gule Gule
Normally I only post cats and dogs from the shelter, but of course there are also other types of animals waiting for a new home. For example, the Fancy rat (in German Farbratte) Gule Gule. A species from which many will surely run away screaming. But they also want to live and the animal shelter gives them a home too. Gule Gule was brought to the shelter together with her friend Abbey. Rats unfortunately have a very short life expectancy and often develop cancerous tumors, so we already had to put Abbey out of her pain.

Chibi
Another cat caught with a live trap on a farm where the cat population was getting out of hand. Chibi also already had a litter of kittens there. She is still very shy, but is making visible progress since she has been at the shelter. For treats and games she overcomes her shyness more and more often.

Pumpkin
Pumpkin was found with another cat on a farm, caught with a live trap and brought to the shelter. She is one of the rare red female cats! The gene that produces the red coloration is located on the X chromosome. A female cat has two X-chromosomes and must therefore inherit two "red" X-chromosomes to develop this color; namely from mother and father. A male cat, on the other hand, has only one X chromosome and must therefore receive only one "red" X chromosome from his mother. That is why there are estimated to be three times more red males than female cats.

Gonzo
Gonzo was caught at a feeding site with a live trap. This was quite time-consuming, because he is very shy and always appeared only at night for a short time. We suspect that he is the father of some kittens that were also caught at that feeding site. Gonzo is not yet happy to be around humans, but unfortunately it was not possible to release him again where he was trapped.

Brownie
Normally I only post cats and dogs from the shelter, but of course there are also other types of animals waiting for a new home. For example the Lop rabbit Brownie. Often such cute rabbits are purchased as "toys" for children. If the children then lose interest, the care makes too much work or they get unwanted offsprings, the animals are then shunted off to the shelter.

Harpet
Whenever we have space for kittens, we help out other shelters that are at risk of overflowing. Harpet is such a kitten from another shelter. At first she was very shy, but after being socialized with two kittens of the same age, she learned a lot from them and gained confidence. Now she is curious about her future home and the adventures that await her there.

Elaine
After the number of stray cats in an allotment garden colony had gotten out of hand, the animal welfare was notified and asked to pick up the cats. The shelter caught all the cats with live-traps, neutered them, vaccinated them and, if necessary, provided medical care. Since the cats had little human contact, they are very shy and difficult to place. It would have been better if the garden owners had taken care of the cats much earlier, before they multiplied so much.
