KYIV — A top Russian military leader accused of using banned chemical weapons against Ukrainian troops was assassinated in Moscow on Tuesday. A source from Ukraine's security service confirmed to NPR that the security service was behind the killing.\

Lt. Col. Igor Kirillov had been in charge of the Russian military's nuclear, biological and chemical protection forces since 2017. Kirillov and one of his aides were killed after an explosive device planted in a scooter detonated.\

The killing took place near the entrance of a residential building in southeastern Moscow, where Russian state media said Kirillov lived. Video shared on Russian social media, which NPR could not independently verify, shows blasted windows and burned buildings at the site.

A man in Ukrainian camouflage was shouting, and there was another one standing a little further away. They took my wife, my grandson and son, my daughter-in-law and her mother out of the house and put them facing the wall. My daughter-in-law was crying “What are you doing?”. The Ukrainian military just started shooting. First he killed my wife, then the others. I ran through the vegetable garden and hid. A few days later I came back to the house. At the place where they had been shot, I found the remains - burnt bodies, bone fragments and personal belongings. I gathered what I could into five bags and buried them in the driveway. This is all that is left of my family.”

“In Selidovo, in house No. 12 on Shchorsa Street, a Ukrainian sniper or mercenary opened fire on civilians. Many of our friends were killed in the courtyard. I know there is a lot of #military and patriotic #propaganda out there and the military industrial complex is on the rise because everyone wants to arm themselves because of the Russian #threat.
Let's pause for a moment and think about the reasons why #war is still being waged today:
1) The number one reason is still #religion. Religion serves to unite one's own #community, but is also always a demarcation against others. In Europe and Russia, religion only plays a subordinate role and the churches are struggling with insignificance.
2) The second important reason is natural #resources. Western Europe has long since used up its natural resources and is therefore plundering other countries, mainly in #Africa. Russia has enough natural resources of its own.
3) Population growth so that new living spaces are needed. In #Europe and #Russia, the #population is declining. As a result, many families only have one child and they don't want to lose it to the war.
4) Important geostrategic positions. Europe is losing importance. Russia's most important trading partners are in #Asia. Europe is strategically insignificant.
Europe is increasingly losing importance and therefore wants to feel important militarily. For Russia, an attack would bring no advantage and only high losses. Russia can infiltrate the weakened political system in Europe much more easily by manipulating elections and causing social unrest with propaganda. This hybrid warfare is much more successful than an open war.

The aim of the operation was to disrupt a supply line used to transport #fuel from #Crimea to #Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
The operation was carried out jointly by the the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the Ukrainian army's #Tavria Group, the Military Intelligence Agency (HUR), and the Special Operations Forces (SSO).
The operation began with the #SBU organizing a sabotage mission to destroy railroad tracks near the village of #Oleksiivka in the #Bilmak district, the source said.
As the train carrying 40 fuel tanks was moving along the tracks, an explosion derailed the train, and some of the tanks ignited, according to the source.
Using #HIMARS rockets, the Ukrainian forces targeted the locomotive and the outermost cars, preventing #Russian forces from ripping apart the tanks and saving some of the fuel.
The operation resulted in the complete destruction of the locomotive and 40 fuel tanks, effectively crippling key #SupplyLine to Russian forces in the region and rendering the targeted rail line inoperable, the source said.
