Help make an orbital megastructure with genetic computation

image

Orbital megastructure

More than two hundred years into the future, our descendants contemplate creating the largest single structure in human history for the next evolutionary leap: a multi-generational starship capable of bringing people to the first truly Earth-like exoplanet. Yet this interstellar ark – to be self-assembled out of builder units in Earth orbit – will be sufficiently complex as well as vast that even designing it involves formidable mathematical challenges. And this odyssey needs to be preceded by a mammoth astronomy effort to prospect the way ahead, involving a formation of orbital telescopes able to operate together as one, yielding combined images of humankind’s new destination equivalent in resolution to one single giant lens.

Shoebox-sized Milani CubeSat joining Hera asteroid mission

Milani CubeSat deployed from Hera asteroid mission

The shoebox-sized Milani CubeSat, which will perform close-up mineral prospecting of the Dimorphos asteroid, is ready for delivery to ESA’s Hera asteroid mission for planetary defence. The spacecraft will carry Milani and a second CubeSat, the Juventas radar imaging spacecraft for probing into the target asteroid, which together will be ESA’s first CubeSats to operate in deep space.

Icy first light of shoebox-sized PRETTY CubeSat

PRETTY is testing 'slant' reflectometry

A shoebox-sized satellite looking far to the horizon picked up a strong signal reflection from hundreds of kilometres below it, beside a lonely polar island in the Canadian Arctic. ESA’s PRETTY CubeSat mission team could not be quite certain of what its instrument first light was showing until cross-checking it against a Sentinel-1 radar map of the same location, to find a precise correlation with a stretch of offshore sea ice.

DART impact might have reshaped Hera's target asteroid

image

Simulation of DART's impact on Dimorphos

ESA’s Hera spacecraft for planetary defence is being prepared for a journey to the distant asteroid moon Dimorphos orbiting around its parent body Didymos. One of the first features Hera will look for is the crater left on Dimorphos by its predecessor mission DART, which impacted the asteroid to deflect its orbit. Yet a new impact simulation study reported in Nature Astronomy today suggests no crater will be found. The DART impact is likely to have remodelled the entire body instead – a significant finding for both asteroid science and planetary defence.
