Samsung Finally Enables the Temperature Sensor on the Galaxy Watch 5: Use it to track menstruation and ovulation using the Samsung Health app

Close-up view of a Galaxy Watch on a wrist
Samsung finally enabled temperature tracking on a smartwatch launched nearly nine months ago. The Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro now offer detailed menstrual tracking by measuring your core body temperature. Samsung says the new feature is rolling out “progressively” to the Samsung Health app in the U.S., Korea, and select European countries.

Rather than simply counting the number of days from when you input your last period, the new Samsung Health will measure your basal body temperature, or BBT, right as you wake up, according to the press release. If your Samsung Health app has been updated, you can find the feature under Cycle Tracking. Samsung says it uses “infrared technology” to track your temperature to determine whether you’re close to ovulating or starting your period.

Well, at least we know it does work now, and I hope its stats still become visible on sleep stats too (like Fitbit has). Bearing in mind now what its use case it, I just hope the data is being protected from the US authorities.

Why I moved from an Apple Watch to a Samsung Galaxy Watch 5

An Apple Watch and a Galaxy Watch 5 side by side with text Why I Changed Apple Watch to Galaxy Watch
In this video I explain my reasons for this move, and also compare some side-by-side features around workouts, HRV/stress, sleep stats, and I show what sort of information both health apps provide. As I mention in the intro this is not a scientific analysis of the two watches, but was done more to gauge whether I had any buyer remorse after making the move.

Without a doubt, if you’re an iPhone user then the Apple Watch is your better bet, and if you’re a Samsung or Android user then the Galaxy Watch 5 is the better choice of these two. But if you are thinking of buying one of these two watches, this video gives a feel of what you can expect to manage with it.
