#Storm #Bert to give the #Southwest and #West #coasts a whack
Amateur meteorologist Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather said this morning that we can expect up to 100mm of rain to fall in parts over the coming 36 hours, bringing a serious risk of flooding.

In Cork, Met Eireann have warned of 'treacherous, dangerous' conditions and say there is a potential for serious damage to properties.

Status #Red #warnings are rare, only issued when there is dangerous and destructive impacts expected. The national forecast has urged people in affected areas to "take action to protect themselves and/or their properties.”

The impact of such huge amounts of rain can be worsened by soil moisture causing serious flooding. The main impacts of Storm Bert are expected in Cork on Saturday morning and into Sunday, but there is a potential for lasting impacts into early next week.

Two counties - #Cork and #Galway - are on a rare Status Red #weather alert from Met Eireann tonight as Storm Bert is set to make landfall bringing serious impacts including serious flooding and dangerous travel conditions.

The two Status Red alerts come into effect alongside Status Orange and Status Yellow alerts nationwide from midnight tonight until 10am Saturday morning.

West Cork is expected to get some of the worst of the weather from after midnight.

Meteorologists are warning of some severe impacts as the second named storm of the season barrels into Ireland, with live weather radars showing Storm Bert swirling over the Atlantic ahead of hitting the western coast overnight.

A number of cattle, sheep, and horses were killed when #lightning struck a high voltage line in a field near #Gort in Co. #Galway recently.

Fianna Fáil councillor in Galway County Council, Gerry Finnerty told Agriland that there were seven cattle, several sheep, and three horses across two farms that were killed as a result.

The councillor in the Gort-Kinvara area said: "The pylon fire could be seen from miles around.

"There was a lot of brightness from the lightning as well."

In a statement to Agriland, the ESB stated: "The overnight lightning strikes that occurred on Sunday into Monday led to damage on the high voltage line between Cashla and Prospect and on pole mounted transformers on the medium voltage network in Galway which led to a series of fuses being blown.

"Unfortunately, a number of livestock that were in close proximity to the high voltage line in the Gort area were found deceased on Monday morning.

"ESB Networks are actively engaging with the landowners involved and are continuing to investigate," the statement added.

Met Éireann stated the majority of lightning occurs in the storm cloud itself or between clouds.

Bufflehead Ducks

While exploring today, I found something unexpected.

enter image description here
We saw some waterfowl quite a ways from shore and difficult to see.
So I set my camera to maximum optical zoom, to see these Bufflehead Ducks.
I looked around and found some identified HERE (Audobon)
They are also known as "The Spirit Bird" and are the smallest diving ducks in North America.
