A #CME was supposed to narrowly miss #Earth today. Instead, it delivered a direct hit. The impact on Dec. 17th (0519 UT) sparked a #G1-class #geomagnetic #storm with bright #auroras over #Alaska:
"The reds were fully visible to the eye!" says photographer Sacha Layos of Fairbanks, AK. "A complete treat for the eyes and soul."

#history 10,000 dead from this storm
The Great Storm of 1703 struck southern #England and #Wales on the night of the 25th November 1703. It would leave over 10,000 dead in its wake, and 13 Royal Navy warships destroyed, including the whole channel squadron just when England was at war with France.
Even the monarch, Queen Anne had to flee before its fury. And whilst the Storm of #1987 was actually more powerful, the loss of life was negligible compared to this almost biblical storm 300 years ago.
In order to compensate for the missed couple of days of cycling during the week, owing to snow, I went on a #Night #Ride today. This enabled me to get used to #riding in the #dark. On my usual route, there are some fairly quiet and hence secluded and #unlit stretches, where #BikeLights are essential although it's still very difficult to spot pedestrians in dark clothing (and also their dogs). Still, no close encounters today. Because of the recently passed #Storm #Bert, a lot of #trees and #hedges have shed #branches and #twigs, which can be more than just a mere nuisance. In the past, they have caused #punctures and have even jammed in the #spikes causing #skidding #hazards. Luckily, no problems today.
#Storm #Bert to give the #Southwest and #West #coasts a whack
Amateur meteorologist Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather said this morning that we can expect up to 100mm of rain to fall in parts over the coming 36 hours, bringing a serious risk of flooding.
Status #Red #warnings are rare, only issued when there is dangerous and destructive impacts expected. The national forecast has urged people in affected areas to "take action to protect themselves and/or their properties.”
The impact of such huge amounts of rain can be worsened by soil moisture causing serious flooding. The main impacts of Storm Bert are expected in Cork on Saturday morning and into Sunday, but there is a potential for lasting impacts into early next week.
Two counties - #Cork and #Galway - are on a rare Status Red #weather alert from Met Eireann tonight as Storm Bert is set to make landfall bringing serious impacts including serious flooding and dangerous travel conditions.
The two Status Red alerts come into effect alongside Status Orange and Status Yellow alerts nationwide from midnight tonight until 10am Saturday morning.
West Cork is expected to get some of the worst of the weather from after midnight.
Meteorologists are warning of some severe impacts as the second named storm of the season barrels into Ireland, with live weather radars showing Storm Bert swirling over the Atlantic ahead of hitting the western coast overnight.

THE STORM IS NOT OVER: A #CME hit #Earth's #magnetic field on May 10th, sparking the biggest #geomagnetic #storm in almost 20 years--an extreme (category G5) event. It is subsiding now (currently category G3), but it is not over. More CMEs are expected to hit Earth's magnetic field during the next 24-48 hours, and they could push the storm back to severe or even extreme levels

#France #floods
#Storm #Monica swept across the country from 08 March 2024 bringing extremely #heavy #rain. Some areas in the south recorded more than 300 mm of rain in 48 hours. Since 09 March, the rain has triggered severe flooding in the departments of Gard, Ardèche and Var.
Update March 13
The Connexion reports:
The body of a man was found yesterday evening (March 12) in the Ardèche department, three days after a hydroelectric plant worker went missing in the area.
It was discovered by hunters and relatives of the 73-year old who disappeared on Saturday evening during flash flooding.
The body was found close to a micropower station along the Eyrieux river, where the man was working during Saturday evening's storms.
Authorities believe it is most probably the body of the missing man, however rescue workers and police forces were unable to reach the location of the body last night but planned to make a fresh attempt this morning.
It now brings the death toll from the weekend's storms and high waves to seven - six in the south of France and one in the west.
An overdue #CME struck #Earth's #magnetic #field on March 3rd. The impact sparked a #G2-class #geomagnetic #storm and bright #auroras around the Arctic Circle. Jan Eklind photographed the display from the window seat of an Airbus A20N at 35,000 feet:
"I was flying from Oslo to Kirkenes on Scandinavian Airlines when the CME struck," says Eklind. "Auroras spread across the sky with twilight in the distance and city lights below."
The CME was hurled into space on Feb. 28th when a magnetic filament connected to sunspot AR3592 erupted. It was not aimed directly at Earth, and forecasters were unsure if it would deliver even a glancing blow; however, the impact was stronger than expected.
