These nuances and variations may be conditioned by territory or class, but more than with idiosyncrasies of local tongue, they have to do with a primordial role of language: the construction of identity. Ik kan er over meepraten. In de les groeten wij elkaar met een welgemeend sjolem aleichem. Maar toen ik dat bij mijn laatste winkelronde in de buurt van het Antwerpse Centraal Station ook probeerde, was het even welgemeende antwoord bij de koosjere viswinkel, traiteur en bakker: ‘goede middag’ of ‘hallo!’ Dat het anders kon en moest, bleek uiteindelijk bij De Heimishe Bakkerij waar vlak na mij een jong meisje binnenkwam, die (dat?) vrolijk sjlum! riep en prompt in het Jiddisch verder werd geholpen.
