Hello all. As of this morning, Gibberfish Social is (probably) gone for good. This will be my new account going forward.

Some explanation: Gibberfish, Inc, the entity which launched and maintained social.gibberfish.org has been defunct for a while now, but I was keeping the domain name registered for the past couple of years with my personal funds solely to keep the pod alive. The registration expired today, and I find myself unable to decrypt the keepass file which contains the registrar credentials. I'm going to spend some more time trying to recover it, but not a lot. If that fails, so goes the pod. Apologies for the abrupt notice to anyone who may still have an active account there.

Was mache ich hier eigentlich? KI füttern, indem ich selbst was schreibe - ich glaube schon. Gegen Kriegshetze vorgehen? Sicher. Leute mit anderen Meinungen verstehen? Auf jeden Fall!
Ein Hoch auf das Netzwerk hier ;)

#oldhere. With Pluspora shutting down it made me think of creating re-introduce-myself post. Please feel free to place me in your aspects if it seems we may have similar interests. I'm a software engineer in Chandler, Arizona. I have four daughters, and five grandchildren. Wendy, the love of my life, and I have been married for 36 years. Spent much of my religious life as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Left that faith in 2007 and now self-identify as an atheist. Yet with my pull towards the religious not going away I joined Valley Unitarian Universalist Congregation in 2015. Originally from Canada we become citizens here in 2010. I'm a registered Democrat with my politics leaning left, but perhaps not as far left as Montana my 18-year-old daughter :-). I started college late in life (at 49) and am currently in Calculus III. I have a life-goal of reading, at least once, every major sacred text. Just started the Adi Granth (sacred scripture of Sikhism).

I often find myself guided by the Stoic thought that "good" and "evil" only exist within oneself. Work good toward all and work to change the world for the better, but in the meantime accept the world as it is. I also often find myself repeating the Hindu phrase "renounce the fruit of action" that I see as a comment to act for the good, but don't demand an specific results.

In regards to software engineering. Be humble about it. Mistake are easy to make. Localize your errors. With error messages, report what you know, not what you think and don't editorialize.

Kind regards, -Randy

Hello,

Welcome all that are #newhere!

I am not really #newhere, rather #oldhere (although I haven't been very active lately).

And now I am a #googleplusrefugee as well, along with many others. Returning to diaspora*
feels like returning to G+ in the beta period, a good foundation with a lot to work on.

The big difference is that while G+ is/was backed by a large corporate entity with lots
of resources, diaspora* is very much depending on us, the users, to get things moving.

That means that changes to the platform takes time. You might even have to contribute
in some way in order to make something happen. This is actually a Good Thing (tm), even
though it might feel like burden. Think of it like this: When was the last time your actions
and opinions actually had any influence on the direction of a social platform?

The development team today consists of a handful of volunteers that have been keping
the dream alive. Without them, there would be nothing but dead code in GitHub.

Hopefully there will be Ruby coders in the stream of people comfing from G+,
it might be that the shutdown of G+ will be a energy boost for disapora*!

There is a lot of energy (and curiosity) in posts from newcomers already, which is fun!

Of course not all of us are Ruby coders, or even coders. As others have said, there are other
ways than writing code that helps the project to move forward. For example, see
Hello and a big Welcome and Calling all coders.

If you are #newhere, please realize that it might actually be up to YOU to suggest a feature,
or to find ways to make this platform work better for all of us.

Ask not what diaspora* can do for you, ask what you can do for disapora*. :-)

Happy 6th Birthday #diaspora*

September 15, 2010 - September 15, 2016

Our goal is to empower people with their data. That is the thing we want.

Maxwell Salzberg

As long as your data is being held by someone else, not only can you not control what they are doing with it right now but you can’t control it in years to come.

Raphael Sofaer

We started to design and build Diaspora because I and the other three founders wanted an alternative to what is already there. There are many social networking extraordinary for what they offer, but one where we wanted them ourselves, as users, we had effective control.

Daniel Grippi

We want to encourage people to share, giving them a platform that where being public is not the default position and people opt in not opt out.

Ilya Zhitomirskiy
