Socialhome.Network as a searchable federation archive

The Socialhome node https://socialhome.network/ is both widely federated AND searchable by non-members. It displays both posts AND profile pages even to non-members, which is NOT the case for Diaspora* pods.

If you're looking for specific content from a now-defunct pod, Socialhome may be able to turn that up for you.

You can search for a specific profile by the its handle, e.g., dredmorbius@diaspora.glasswings.com or dredmorbius@joindiaspora.com, for my present and now-defunct Joindiaspora profiles, using the site's Search feature.

My (now-offline at origin) Joindiaspora profile appears as:

https://socialhome.network/p/702b2f0c-0f8f-4e17-b308-24a43f9ebed9/

Note that the profile GUID is NOT the same as it would be for my Joindiaspora profle itself (d8210c0de509264f`). The Diaspora* GUID can be used to construct a URL visible from the Diaspora* Pod you have an account on and are logged in to, but not as a globally-viewable third-party-accessible URL. Socialhome solves this problem.

That is, if you are on Glasswings, this URL links to my Joindiaspora profile:

https://diaspora.glasswings.com/people/d8210c0de509264f

But if you're not, it won't. Glasswings users might try a different pod such as Diasp.org:

https://diasp.org/people/d8210c0de509264f

Instead, third-party visitors are presented with a log-in / registration page. Socialhome solves this problem specifically.

There may be additional features / API apparent at the Socialhome GitLab repo: https://git.feneas.org/socialhome/socialhome

Noting that that is a FENEAS URL, also likely to go offline in the near future, GitHub:

https://github.com/jaywink/socialhome

Limitations

The downsides to Socialhome seem to be that:

  • References to content and profiles does not follow Diaspora*-assigned GUIDs. That is, there's no automated way to refernece a specific post or profile.
  • I'm not seeing an obvious way of exposing a JSON abstract of posts or profiles --- the Diaspora* trick of appending .json to the end of a URL does not work, and I'm not seeing a JSON abstract in the raw HTML. There may still be an API.

Photos are displayed but appear to be served from the original host, not separately federated. Once the origin host goes offline, photo links / embeds will be broken.

It's not clear how widely or deeply content is federated, though some should be better than none.

This option was brought to my attention by @Isaac Kuo in comments here.

#Pluspora Final Days --- Shutdown likely on 1 April 2022

For those who are still on the Pluspora Pod, final shutdown will be imminent in the next days. The planned shutdown date is 1 April 2022 so far as I'm aware.

Things you should do NOW

  • Create a new profile elsewhere if you have not already. Diasp.org, Glasswings, and several other pods have welcomed well-behaved members. I can offer invites to Glasswings on request.

  • Tell others where you've gone, and where you've come from. That is, leave a FORWARDING address on your old Pluspora profile, and a PREVIOUS address on your new profile elsewhere. Posts tagged with #SIGNALFLARE will be easier for others to find as well.

  • If you have any thought that you might want to retain your old posts / content, archive that NOW. Note that given the passing of David Thiery, support for failed exports is unlikely, but you can at least try. Content cannot presently be imported to a Diaspora pod, but may be in the future. I've created numerous tools for working with that data described in posts below.

  • Federation will preserve at least some of your content on Diaspora*. This means that having followers on other Pods is highly useful. I've explored the possibilities and limits of this further elsewhere.

  • I've created tools and methods for archiving content, including automated submission of posts to the Internet Archive, and manual submission to Archive Today. Both rely on having a downloaded archive of your older content.

  • Follower / Block lists are not importable. You'll have to re-establish contact with people generally manually. Given that many Pluspora contacts were on Pluspora itself ... this may be complicated. The regular #Checkin posts are an excellent way to get back in touch with the community.

  • If you want your Profile Bio Page to be world-readable, you need to set that specifically at /profile/edit. Toggle "Visibility of your extended profile" to "Public".

  • If nothing else, you can save your Profile page at https://pluspora.com/u/<username> to the Internet Archive and Archive Today manually by visiting https://web.archive/org/save/ and https://archive.today. Do this after leaving a forwarding address to make your new profile easier to find.

  • Please do NOT delete your profile or posts if you wish for federated copies to remain available elsewhere. Unfortunately this is something of an unclean break. Deleting your profile will delete all your posts / comments to other pods.

Godspeed Joindiaspora

Joindiaspora.com as a fully-functioning Diaspora* pod is no more. It was the first, and possibly largest node on the federated Diaspora* network, both factors of which contributed in part to its demise as detailed by its administrators and the Diaspora* developers team.

It will have some limited continued existence, see below and links for details.

At 20:01 UTC the site started throwing 502 Bad Gateway errors. This means that the planned maintenance has begun. According to previous announcements (see below), the site will return in a "limited-service mode" at some future point, precise time not known. How long the site will remain available in this mode has also not been clear, though suggestions are that it will be at least a month. I would hope longer.

  • On Friday, March 4th, at around 20:00 UTC, JoinDiaspora will go down for a long maintenance break. We cannot yet estimate how long this will take. We will use that time to move JoinDiaspora and its data from infrastructure maintained by Feneas to infrastructure maintained by the diaspora* Core Team. This work will not resolve existing issues with exporting account data. Our work on the export feature will start at a later time, see below.
  • When maintenance is completed, JoinDiaspora will be available again in a limited-service mode. In this mode, you will no longer be able to read or write posts or comments. However, you will be able to manage your account, and you will be able to export your account data.

-- An update on the future of JoinDiaspora.com 2022-2-22

As has been typical of the shutdown, there was no final announcement that I'm aware. The #Joindiaspora hashtag has a few recent posts from members, though none from Podmins, and the announcement posts lacked any hashtags --- the only real searchable Diaspora* mechanism --- at all. Communications could have been much better than they were. I'll be discussing this and other matters in future.

There has been an update at the Joindiaspora Sunset Team profile:

As announced in our announcement, the server migration is currently underway. Given the size of JoinDiaspora's filesystem and database, this might take a couple of hours to complete.

https://pod.diaspora.software/posts/5009540

I strongly recommend monitoring that profile for further announcements:

Profile: @The JoinDiaspora Sunset Team (joindiaspora-sunset@pod.diaspora.software)
URL: https://pod.diaspora.software/u/joindiaspora-sunset

I do want to thank Lukas Matt and others for their time and effort all the same. Joindiaspora, like the Diaspora* project itself, has been a volunteer and amateur effort, in the original sense of that last word, performed for love not lucre.

Status of my Joindiaspora content

I've taken pains to see that my own content from my Joindiaspora profile, @Doc Edward Morbius (moved to Glasswings), remains as generally available as possible. Specifically:

  • I've requested several data exports, the most recent of which created yesterday. I've engaged minimally on the platform in the past two months, since the shutdown was initially announced.

  • As many posts as possible have been federated to Glasswings, and hopefully other pods, as possible.

  • My earliest remote followers came from the following pods and dates, which should provide the most complete set of federated posts with comments: pod.orkz (25 December 2013), pod.geraspora.de (18 January 2014), diasp.eu (31 March, 2014), diasp.de (6 May, 2014), diaspora-fr.org (22 July, 2014), spyurk.am (11 August, 2014).

  • Glasswings (diaspora.glasswings.com), my new home, seems to have begun federating between mid-April and mid-May, 2020, as the Covid-19 pandemic ramped up and I posted on that topic. Earlier posts may be present (mostly by recent federation triggered by me) but the comments date from the first federation event. Yes, Diaspora* federation is ... complicated.

  • WIth few exceptions, any still-extant content should be available under at least its joindiaspora.com original URL at Archive.Today, including full comments. This includes both my own original posts and reshares.

  • I've made multiple attempts to save posts to the Internet Archive. This is nominally easier as it may be automated. It does not preserve comments. In practice, I've found over the past several months that automated submissions via the Archive's own supported methods do not succeed consistently. I don't know how successful those efforts have been yet, I do plan on assessing this in future. The Archive is useful in that many people and tools will consult it automatically for links which have expired. Archive.Today does not yet have a similar recognition.

  • I do NOT plan to delete my Joindiaspora profile, as that would have the effect of deleting all my content, including federated content. This has been an issue I've observed from others' deleted profiles as I've attempted my own data salvage operation.

I've also created, and am continuing to refine, tools which work on the downloaded data extract and which provide both local access to that content and can create formats and exports which are useful in referring to older content. In particular, an "Archive Index" generator, which summarizes the content and provides links which should in theory point to extant copies still on line. Again, that's ongoing work, though I've published draft versions. Those tools, incidentally, assisted greatly in manually archiving and federating most of my 2,659 posts and reshares over the past two months. Tedious, but in my case, largely tractable. I'll be posting a curated set of public indices highlighting more significant content in future.

I write much of this in the hopes that it will be useful to others, most especially members of other pods either presently annoucing shutdown plans (#Pluspora most notably) or which do so in future.

Profile Archives

I'm archiving my public posts at Archive.org's Wayback Machine. That captures the post text but not comments.
This process is automated and fairly easy.

I'm also archiving a selection of more significant posts at Archive.Today, which captures full comments. Those may be either via the joindiaspora.com domain or the diaspora.glasswings.com domain. This process is manual and requires individually submitting items. It is also generating notifications for any participants in old threads, I apologise for that.

Much of my public content should remain viewable on other pods if federated there, though once Joindiaspora.com is offline, interactions with content (comments, likes, reshares) will probably not be possible.

I've also privately exported my posts and will update that archive prior to the final shutdown.

I'm trying a new curation method for the Glasswings account with an Index and Curation thread:

https://diaspora.glasswings.com/posts/d9abf9f05459013a0103448a5b29e257

Posts from both Glasswings and Pluspora are included there, with title and often a short blurb, as well as a link. Given the lack of useful Diaspora* search, I'm hoping that will make finding / referencing earlier content easier, without overstuffing my bio page as I'd done here on JoindiasporaCom.

As previously, I have several other online accounts and profiles:

Not especially active.

I do not have any accounts on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or most other mainstream services. "dredmorbius" on these services is not me. (I'm aware of at least one Twitter account similarly named, again not me.)

There may be other incidental accounts on smaller services (e.g., GitHub, etc.), typically under my "dredmorbius" nym.

Most or all of those channels will also be shut down on the process of the FENEAS dissolution. There is an IRC channel on Libera: irc://irc.libera.chat:6697 (TLS)

For those on Reddit, there is an announcement in /r/plexodus: https://old.reddit.com/r/plexodus/comments/s06kz4/joindiasporaorg_will_shut_down_1_march_2022/

I'm offering this as a place to discuss moving off the now-doomed #Joindiaspora pod (https://joindiaspora.com).

Notes:

  1. Despite its many limitations, Plain Old Email and a publicly-accessible web archive remain the most-accessible and universal standard for communications.

Joindiaspora.com will be shutting down 1 March 2022.

The instance is my own primary Diaspora instance

Announcement:
https://git.feneas.org/feneas/association/-/raw/master/comms/dissolving-the-association-2022-01-09.txt

There's a Diaspora discussion here: https://joindiaspora.com/posts/f605e81053c3013ae6b9002590d8e506

I've posted an announcement to ArchiveTeam's subreddit here: https://old.reddit.com/r/Archiveteam/comments/s05wk0/federated_networks_association_ry_dissolving/?

And there's an HN discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29868837

I'll be making my own plans shortly. Among those is assessing whether or not I want to remain on Diaspora* itself ... it's been useful to date, though slow development and dissatisfaction with existing features have been a concern. I may be approaching podmins for hosting.

I would like to note that federated and self-hosted services do run on the backs of volunteers, and that resources and interest are finite. I've tried to do what I could to support these, though I've long felt my contributions were insufficient. Reach out to your own podmins and see what support they could use. And recognise that even coordinating love and support is itself a task requiring overhead.

That said, I have ongoing presences at:

The GitLab lair will eventually be activated, I promise. https://gitlab.com/dredmorbius/lair-of-the-id.git

I'll probably try to wind down much further activity here soon. Hopefully I can continue at a new location.

I'll also be attemtping to archive as much of my own older content as possible at the Internet Archive.

If you're on JoinDiaspora, request an archive of your content NOW

This is under your Profile -> Settings -> Request Profile Data

(I anticipate high demand for this service, if not now, then soon.)

And that’s really it for Google+

... To complicate matters, Google kept Google+ around, even after the launch of Currents, but in an email to G Suite admins, it has now announced that Google+ for G Suite will close its doors on July 6, after which there will be no way to opt out of Currents or revert back to Google+.

And with that, Google has driven the final nail into Google+’s coffin. The Google+ mobile apps will be automatically updated to Currents. All existing links to Google+ will redirect to Currents.

Going forward, Google+ will only live on as a hazy memory, filled with circles of friends, all of which were forced to use their real name (at least at the beginning), +1 buttons everywhere, sparks and the promise of fun games, ripples and more. ....

Thoughts on conversation-generative online discussion platforms and features

I've become increasily aware of how conversation medium and participants shapes the "quality" of conversation.

Conversation scales poorly.

It's also fragile and very easily destroyed, discouraged, or dissuaded.

The biggest issue I find on Reddit itself is that there's no notion of "thread (or post) as conversation". And absolutely no support for same. Reddit is where interesting conversations go to die.

An item is posted. It's at top-of-page for ... a few minutes or hours, possibly days ... then vanishes And no amount of activity within a thread will boost it, generally. Even those who'd participated in the discussion have no signal of any activity. The best that can happen is that members might subscribe to replies for two days. This is madness.

Put another way, Reddit's post-weighting algorithm is all but entirely determined by posting time, not activity recency. This avoids "necroposting", for both good and bad. For small niche discussion, all but entirely bad.

Problem is that Reddit's scale spans about 6-8 orders of magnitude -- subredduts of < 10 members, to > 10,000,000. One-size-fits all ... wears poorly. Most of the glaring problems are at large scale. The small subs get neglected. Clue flees.

The little-lamented Imzy had the problem of seeing Reddit's problems-at-scale, whilst utterly failing to grasp its own failures-at-inception --- no scale --- and failing to address those. Put another way, how you get to scale, by solving the problems of inception, teaches you nothing about hoe to survive at scale. The problems are entirely different.

As noted at HN, for all its copious faults, Google+ solved this particular problem well. Facebook may also (I don't use it). Microblogging platforms (Twitter, Mastodon, Fediverse) at least present individual posts within a thread well, though they seem to uniformly suck at actual threading (see: Threadreader). Diaspora ... kind of does this but was an immensely clunky slow interface for notifications & response.

But yes, as McLuhan said, "the medium is the message". It has profound impacts and influences, most not immediately apparent -- they're emergent properties.

Independent of medium, scale, expressive richness (e.g., markdown, multimedia), latency, arity, ephemerality / permanence, message size, moderation (leaf-node or trunk), culture, founding cohort, exogenous vs. endogenous motivators and incentives (or demotivators and disincentives), editability/revisability, search, organisation and management tools, protocols and standards, and much more, all matter.

I've discussed some of this at the (rather neglected) discussion of social media types and characteristics at Plexodus Wiki, see especially Platform Types and Features and Capabilities.

Bruce Schneier: Inrupt, Tim Berners-Lee's Solid, and Me

Schneier has signed on to TBL's "Solid" distributed self-host-capable social media platform company, Inrupt.

I have joined a company called Inrupt that is working to bring Tim Berners-Lee's distributed data ownership model that is Solid into the mainstream. (I think of Inrupt basically as the Red Hat of Solid.) I joined the Inrupt team last summer as its Chief of Security Architecture, and have been in stealth mode until now.

The idea behind Solid is both simple and extraordinarily powerful. Your data lives in a pod that is controlled by you. Data generated by your things -- your computer, your phone, your IoT whatever -- is written to your pod. You authorize granular access to that pod to whoever you want for whatever reason you want. Your data is no longer in a bazillion places on the Internet, controlled by you-have-no-idea-who. It's yours. If you want your insurance company to have access to your fitness data, you grant it through your pod. If you want your friends to have access to your vacation photos, you grant it through your pod. If you want your thermostat to share data with your air conditioner, you give both of them access through your pod.

This was one of the more interesting (though not yet ready for prime-time) options we looked at in the #Plexodus G+ shutdown migration.
