#UK poised to drop plans to replace home #gas #boilers with #hydrogen alternatives | #HydrogenPower | The Guardian

In my opinion, it was a silly idea to replace natural gas infrastructure with hydrogen burning, primarily because it is not produced in an environmentally friendly way and the current method pumps out lots of #GreenhouseGases and #Pollution, thus negating the supposed benefit of burning it. Better to heat houses with #HeatPumps powered from renewable sources.

New system for recycling wind turbine blades has been invented.

"Turbine blades have previously been challenging to recycle due to the chemical properties of epoxy resin, a resilient substance that was believed to be impossible to break down into re-usable components. This has led to many technology leaders attempting to replace or modify epoxy resin with alternatives that can be more easily treated. Vestas' solution is enabled by a novel chemical process that can chemically break down epoxy resin into virgin-grade materials."

"The newly discovered chemical process shows that epoxy-based turbine blades, whether in operation or sitting in landfill, can be turned into a source of raw material to potentially build new turbine blades. As the chemical process relies on widely available chemicals, it is highly compatible for industrialisation, and can therefore be scaled up quickly."

Apparently the exact chemical process is a secret, though.

Looking at the data for #electricity demand for the #UK over a period of months, it seems like it rarely dips below 30 GW or much above 40 GW. With the introduction of large numbers of #ElectricVehicles, I expect that demand to rise significantly but if car batteries are also used partly for domestic use then it may smooth out peak demand out. More #WindFarms and other sustainable sources will needed as well as #NuclearPower for the base load.

Researchers create smaller, cheaper flow batteries for clean energy

Flow batteries offer a solution. Electrolytes flow through electrochemical cells from storage tanks in this rechargeable battery. The existing flow battery technologies cost more than $200/kilowatt hour and are too expensive for practical application, but engineers have now developed a more compact flow battery cell configuration that reduces the size of the cell by 75%, and correspondingly reduces the size and cost of the entire flow battery. The work could revolutionize how everything from major commercial buildings to residential homes are powered.
