Unless you've been living under a rock, you probably know about the fiasco in the game development world regarding the Unity video game engine.
"The game engine company Unity has once again gained notoriety for offending its users. This time, they've announced a $0.20 per install fee for games that surpass $200,000 in revenue."

But behind the scenes, this has sparked a great deal of interest in Godot, the leading open source game engine.
"Whether or not Unity intended to, I think they've awoken a sleeping giant. Godot almost seemed ambivalent to Unity before -- but now they're promising to take care of the users that Unity has left behind."
"So, if I was a big studio with millions of dollars to toss around, I'd put it into Godot. Free software can't be stopped."
Chickensoft makes open source tools for Godot and C#.
How to build a video wall for VFX. If you've ever wondered how they build those video walls so they can film people without green screens in movies, but with the background projected on screens, this video explains it. They build a video wall with 56 columns, 10 rows high. Each panel has 192 by 192 pixels. It's grouped into 4 sections, with 14 columns and 10 rows in each section. Each section is powered by a separate computer running Unreal Engine. They employ a variety of tips & tricks to get the panels exactly lined up. If there is even a tiny misalignment, the glitch creates visible seams. The firmware color settings have to be exactly the same for all the panels. The panels are often sold differently and any differences are visible when you have cameras pointed at them all day. So they have to be reprogrammed. It takes about 8 people a week to make the whole video wall.

Saturday Confession: I'm a sucker for #GamesWorkshop video game adaptations, especially #Warhammer40k. I've spent so much time at my friends looking at the static miniatures and reading the army rule books without ever using them that I'm excited every time I see the characters, vehicles and weapons I've come to know so well animate in a game.

Death Stranding (2020) is once again available for free on the Epic Store until May 25th. I obtained a copy the same way earlier this year and I've written a review of this game on my blog, but it definitely isn't meant for people who didn't play the game first.

Valve has announced that their annual #Dota2 tournament The International would take place in Seattle and the play-offs are on the Oct 27th-29th week-end. I've been wanting to attend The International for several years, but so far it has taken place in remote locations around the world I wasn't able to fly to.
This year it finally would be doable for me, but I wouldn't want to go on my own (or inflict this on my partner), do I know any fellow Dota 2 enthusiasts planning on attending the event with whom we could group together?
