Russian soldiers and their families face severe backlash by the Russian government if they surrender. To protect them and their families, the Ukrainian troops advise them to wear (makeshift) masks when they surrender, like you can see in this video, so they can't be identified. The Ukrainians will declare them as "captured in battle" so their families have a chance of financial help from the Russian government that threw these soldiers into the meatgrinder.
