Today we are talking about the 6th episode of the 3rd season of "Love, Death & Robots" called: #Swarm

The episode is about human scientists exploring a swarm. They can observe and explore everything, because they are non-threatening to the swarm. The swarm hollows out asteroids and creates an artificial atmosphere inside. This is how the swarm has survived for millions of years. The interesting thing is that the swarm consists of many different species that seem to have been assimilated by the swarm. Now each species has a special ability with which it ensures the survival of the swarm. Everything is controlled by phenomena. One species still has a primitive language. Apparently, these were intelligent life forms that once had the ability to travel through space and were then assimilated by the swarm.

The scientists manage to influence some swarm participants with pheromones to give them an egg. They want to genetically modify this egg to breed a swarm that can execute commands from humans. As a result, the humans are attacked by guards and brought to a new type of swarm participant. He has high intelligence and explains that he was created by the queen as a defensive tactic against the actions of the humans. He explains to the humans that they are now being assimilated by the swarm and are being bred to best serve the swarm to ward off further attacks from the humans.

The intelligent swarm participant reminded me of the Brain Bugs in Starship Troopers. What intelligent species would be so diabolical as to breed another species to its advantage?

Another philosophical question is whether too much intelligence is rather negative for evolution over a long period of time? The jellyfish is theoretically immortal but has no brain. Can one enjoy immortality without consciousness? What is the point of our intelligence if we only use it to wage wars and destroy our habitat?
