Yshá`Yâhuw (Isaiah) 36
’Ashshúwr threatens Yruwshâláim and taunts Yâ-hwéh
- And it was in the year fourteen for the king ChizqiyYâ ́huw (244), Çanchëríyv (245), the king of Successful One (’Ashshúwr) ascended against all of the fortified cities of Yâhuwthâ ́h, and took them. 2. And the king of Successful One (’Ashshúwr) dispatched the chief irrigator from Lâkhíysh towards Yruwshâláim, to the king, ChizqiyYâ ́huw, amid a massive army, and he took a position by the water conduit of the upper pool, by the road of the field of the launderer. 3. And there came out to him ’Elyâqíym, the son of ChilqiyYâ ́huw, who was over the house, and Shevnâ ́’ the scribe, and Yâhuw’â ́ch the son of ’Âçâ ́ph the recorder. 4. And the chief irrigator said to them, "Say now to ChizqiyYâ ́huw, thus says the great king, the king of Successful One (’Ashshúwr): What is this 'Hope' that you trust in? 5. I have stated that 'strategy' and 'bravery in battle' are only words of speech; now, on whom are you relying that you should rebel against me? 6. Look! You rely on the support of this splintered cane, on Entrenchments (Mitsráyim), which one supports himself on it, but it enters through his palm and it perforates it – thus is Par`óh, the king of Entrenchments (Mitsráyim) for all who rely on him! 7. And if you will say to me, 'On Yâ-hwéh our Power we rely', Isn't it he, ChizqiyYâ ́huw, who has removed His high places and His altars, and who said to Yâhuwthâ ́h and to Yruwshâláim, "It is before this altar you must worship"? 8. So now negotiate a pledge to my sovereign the king of Successful One (’Ashshúwr), and I will grant to you two thousand horses if you are capable of setting riders upon them. 9. So how is it you would repel the appearance of the governor of one of the least of the subjects of my sovereign though you put your trust on Entrenchments (Mitsráyim) for chariots and warhorses? 10. So now, could I without Yâ-hwéh have come up against this Land to destroy it? Yâ-hwéh is Who said to me, 'Ascend to this Land and spoil it!' 11. And ’Elyâqíym and Shevnâ ́’ and Yâhuw’â ́ch said to the chief of irrigation, "Speak ’Arâmíyth now to your servants because we can understand it, but do not speak to us Yâhuwthíyth within earshot of the people that are on the wall." 12. But the chief of irrigation said, "Did my sovereign dispatch me to say these things to your sovereign and to you? Doesn't it concern the mortal men who sit on the wall, to eat their excrement and to drink their urine with you?" 13. And the chief of irrigation stood up and he called in a great voice in Yâhuwthíyth, and he said, "Hear the words of the great king, the king of Successful One (’Ashshúwr); 14. Thus says the king: Do not let ChizqiyYâ ́huw deceive you, because he is unable to rescue you! 15. And don’t let ChizqiyYâ ́huw make you trust in Yâ-hwéh, saying, "Yâ-hwéh will surely rescue us! This city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Successful One (’Ashshúwr)!" 16. Do not listen to ChizqiyYâ ́huw! Because thus says the king of Successful One (’Ashshúwr): 'Make a peace-treaty with me, and come out to me! And each shall eat of his vine, and each one of his fig tree, and each shall drink waters of his cistern 17. until I come and I take you to a land like your land – a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards!' 18. Lest ChizqiyYâ ́huw should lure you, saying, "Yâ-hwéh, He shall deliver us!" Did the mighty ones of the heathen masses deliver any of their lands from the hand of the king of Successful One (’Ashshúwr)? 19. Where are the mighty ones of Chamâ ́th and ’Arpâ ́th? Where are the mighty ones of Çpharwâ ́yim, or that have delivered Shomrówn from my hand? 20. Who among all of the mighty ones of these lands is one who has saved their lands from my hand, that Yâ-hwéh should deliver Yruwshâláim from my hand?" 21. But they remained silent and they did not respond a word to him, because this was the command of the king, saying, "You shall not answer him." 22. So ’Elyâqíym the son of ChilqiyYâ ́huw who was over the house, and Shevnâ ́h the scribe and Yâhuw’â ́ch the son of ’Âçâ ́ph, the recorder, came to ChizqiyYâ ́huw in torn garments and they reported to him the words of the chief of irrigation.
