Survivors inquire of Yâ-hwéh, but disbelieve messenger

  1. And all of the officials of the forces and Yâhuwchânâ ́n and YzanYâ ́huw the son of Howsha'Yâ ́hu and all of the people from the small even to the great drew near, 2. And they said to YirmYâ ́huw the preilluminator, "Allow now our supplication to fall before you so you might intercede on our behalf to Yâ-hwéh your Power, on behalf of all of this remnant, because few of us are left from having been many, just as your eyes can see us; 3. And may Yâ-hwéh your Power declare to us the way in which we should walk and what matter that we should do." 4. And YirmYâ ́huw said to them, "I have heard it, look, I am praying to Yâ-hwéh your Power as you dictated, and it shall come to pass, every word that Yâ-hwéh answers to you I will tell it to you, I will not withhold a word from you." 5. Then they were who said to YirmYâ ́huw, "May Yâ-hwéh be against us for a true and trustworthy Witness if we do not do thus according to every word that Yâ-hwéh your Power sends you to us, 6. Whether it be good or whether it be bad, we shall obey the voice of Yâ-hwéh our Power to Whom we are sending you, in order that it may be well for us because we will obey the voice of Yâ-hwéh our Power." 7. And it came to pass, at the end of ten days, then the Word of Yâ-hwéh was towards YirmYâ ́huw, 8. So he called to Yâhuwchânâ ́n and the officials of the forces which were with him and to all of the people from the least even to the great; 9. And he said to them, "Thus says Yâ-hwéh: 10. If you shall surely stay in this Land, then I shall build you up and I will not tear you down, and I will plant you and I will not pluck you out because I am suffering grief about the disaster which I have worked against you. 11. Do not be frightened from the presence of the king of Bâvél which you are fearing, do not be afraid due to his presence, because I am with you to rescue you and to deliver you from his hand; 12. And I will grant compassions to you so he will have compassion for you so he will bring you back to your territory; 13. Yet, if you are saying, "We will not stay in this land in order to not hear the voice of Yâ-hwéh your Power," 14. Saying "no, because we are going to the land of Mitsráyim where we will not see war nor the sound of the horn (showphâ ́r), and we will not be hungry for the bread, so there we shall stay!" 15. Then at that time, therefore, hear the Word of Yâ-hwéh: If you surely set your face to enter Mitsráyim and you go to sojourn there, 16. Then it shall come to pass that the sword from which you have been afraid shall find you there in the land of Mitsráyim, and the famine which ye have looked for shall overtake you, following you into Mitsráyim, and there you will die; 17. And all of the men that set their faces to go to Mitsráyim to sojourn there, they shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and there shall not be any survivor from them to escape from the presence of disaster that I bring upon them; 18. Because," thus says Yâ-hwéh: "Just as My anger has been poured out upon the inhabitants of Yruwshâláim, thus shall My fury be poured out upon you by your entering Mitsráyim, and ye will become a desolation, and be under the power of others, and for a curse (’âlâ ́h), and for a reproach, and ye shall not see this place anymore." 19. Yâ-hwéh has dictated it concerning you, the remnant of Yâhuwthâ ́h: Do not enter Mitsráyim, know for certain (that I have warned you today), 20. because ye have only been misleading yourselves as ye are who sent me to Yâ-hwéh your Power, saying, "Pray on our behalf to Yâ-hwéh (our Power), and all that Yâ-hwéh (our Power) says to you we will do it."" 21. but you have not heeded the voice of Yâ-hwéh your Power in all that He sent me to you. 22. So at this time you can know for certain that you shall die by the sword and by the famine in the place where you desire to enter to sojourn."

GthalYâ ́huw assassinated

  1. And it came to pass during the seventh month, Yishmâ'ë ́’l the son of NthanYâ ́huw the son of ’Eliyshâmâ ́ from the seed of the royalty, and ten mortal men with him came to GthalYâ ́huw and they ate there bread together in the Mitspâ ́h (Watchtower). 2. And Yishmâ'ë ́’l the son of NthanYâ ́huw and ten of the men which were with him got up and they slew GthalYâ ́huw whom the king of Bâvél had appointed over the Land, 3. and (Yishmâ'ë ́’l killed) all of the Yâhuwthím that had been with him, (with GthalYâ ́huw) in the Mitspâ ́h (Watchtower) and all of the Kasdíym that were found there, (the mortal men of battle). 4. And it happened on the second day after the killing of GthalYâ ́huw when no one knew of it, 5. Then mortal men came from Shkhém, from Shilów and from Shomrówn, eighty men with shaved beards and torn garments and beating their breasts, with grain offerings and incense in their hands to bring them to the house of Yâ-hwéh. 6. And Yishmâ'ë ́’l went out to meet them (from the Mitspâ ́h (Watchtower),) as they walked and wept then he said to them, "Come to GthalYâ ́huw!" 7. And it happened when they went to the inside of the city, then he (and the men that were with him) slaughtered them and threw them into the cistern. 8. But ten men appeared among them, and they said to Yishmâ'ë ́’l, "Do not kill us because we have hiddensome wheat and barley and oil and honey in the field," so he held off and he did not kill them from among the others. 9. And the cistern where Yishmâ'ë ́’l threw all of the corpses of the men that he slew it is the great one which the king ’Âçâ made due to the presence of Ba'shâ ́’ the king of Yisrâ’ë ́l. It is the one Yishmâ'ë ́’l the son of NthanYâ ́huw filled with the slain. 10. Then Yishmâ'ë ́’l took captive all of the remainder of the people which were in the Mitspâ ́h (Watchtower): the daughters of the king, which (Nvuwzar’athâ ́n) the chief of the guardsmen had committed to GthalYâ ́huw the son of ’Achiyqâ ́m, and he went to cross over to the Tribal sons (Ammówn); 11. But Yâhuwchânâ ́n the son of Qârë ́ach and all of the officials of the forces that were with him heard of all of the evil that Yishmâ'ë ́’l the son of NthanYâ ́huw had done, 12. And they took all of their soldiers and they went to battle against him and they found him against the abundant waters which are in Ğiv'ówn; 13. And it happened when all of the people which were with Yishmâ'ë ́’l saw Yâhuwchânâ ́n, and all of the officials of the forces that were with him, 14. And (all of the people which Yishmâ'ë ́’l had taken captive from Mitspâ ́h turned around and) they returned to Yâhuwchânâ ́n; 15. But Yishmâ'ë ́’l escaped with eight mortal men and he went to the Tribal sons (Ammówn); 16. And Yâhuwchânâ ́n and all of the officials of the forces that were with him took back all of the remnant of the people which he brought back from Yishmâ'ë ́’l, valiant mortal men of battle and women and toddlers and ministers of state which he brought back from Ğiv'ówn; 17. And they went but they stayed in the lodging place of Kimhâ ́m, which is near Bëyth-Léchem to go to enter Mitsráyim 18. due to the presence of the Kasdíym, becausethey were afraid due to them because Yishmâ'ë ́’l had slain GthalYâ ́huw, whom the king of Bâvél had appointed over the Land.

Yâ-hwéh speaks through Nvuwzar’athâ ́n

  1. The message that was from Yâ-hwéh towards YirmYâ ́huw after Nvuwzar’athâ ́n the chief of the guardsmen had released him from the Râmâ ́h (Hill) when he had procured him when he was bound in chains in the midst of all of the captives of Yruwshâláim and Yâhuwthâ ́h who were being taken into exile into Bâvél; 2. And the chief of the guardsmen procured for YirmYâ ́huw then he said to him, "Yâ-hwéh your Power, He dictated this disaster to this place, 3. and He brought it to pass; So Yâ-hwéh did work just as He dictated because ye erred against Yâ-hwéh and ye did not heed His voice, so this matter has come to pass for you [plural]. 4. So at this time, look, I am setting you free today from the manacles that are upon your hands. If it is good in your eyes to come with me to Bâvél, come, and I will watch over you; but if it is bad in your eyes to come with me to Bâvél, don’t. Look, the entire Land is before you for goodness, so it is up to you to go towards where it is upright in your eyes to go, go! 5. And the chief of the guardsmen gave to him (food supplies and) a gift of funds raised and let him go. 6. So he came to GthalYâ ́huw (the son of ’Achiyqâ ́m) of the Mitspâ ́h (Watchtower) and he stayed with him in the midst of the people who remained in the Land; 7. And all of the officials of the forces that were in the field, they and their mortal men, heard that the king of Bâvél appointed GthalYâ ́huw () over the Land and put him in charge of mortal men and women (and toddlers and from the helpless of the land) which had not been exiled into Bâvél; 8. Assassination plot against GthalYâ ́huw, he does not seek Yâ-hwéh's help

  1. And Yâhuwnâthâ ́n the son of Qârë ́ach and all of the officials of the forces that were in the field, they came to GthalYâ ́huw of the Mitspâ ́h (Watchtower), 14. And they said to him, "Do you surely know that Ba'alíyç the king of the Tribal sons (Ammówn) has dispatched Yishmâ'ë ́’l (the son of NthanYâ ́huw) to you to slay your life?" But GthalYâ ́huw (the son of ’Achiyqâ ́m) did not believe them. 15. Then Yâhuwchânâ ́n (the son of Qârë ́ach) spoke to GthalYâ ́huw in private in the Mitspâ ́h (Watchtower), saying, "I will go now and I will slay Yishmâ'ë ́’l, and do not let anyone know. Why should he slay your life so all of Yâhuwthâ ́h should be scattered, which are being gathered to you, and the remnant of Yâhuwthâ ́h perish?" 16. "Go and you will speak to Éveth-Mélekh the Kuwshíy, saying, "Thus says Yâ-hwéh the Power of Yisrâ’ë ́l: Look, I am bringing to pass My words against this city for harm and not for goodness, and they shall happen in front of you on that day, 17. YirmYâ ́huw lowered into the cistern, rescued

And ShphaţYâ ́hu the son of Mattâ ́n and GthalYâ ́huw the son of Pashchúwr and Yuwkhál the son of ShelemYâ ́huw (and Pashchúwr the son of MalkkiyYâ ́hu) heard the words that YirmYâ ́huw was speaking to all of the people, saying: 2. "Thus says Yâ-hwéh: "The one staying in this city, he shall die by the sword, by the famine, or by the pestilence, but the one going out to the Kasdíym, he shall live, and his life shall become his for a spoil and he shall live! 3. Thus says Yâ-hwéh, surely this city shall be given into the hands of the forces of the king of Bâvél, and he shall capture her." 4. Then the officials said to the king, "This man must be killed now because concerning this, he is weakening the resolve of the men of battle remaining in this city and the hands of all of the people, saying to them such words as these, because this man, he isn’t seeking the peace for this people, as instead he seeks their harm!" 5. And the king TsithqiyYâ ́huw said, "Look, he is in your power," because there was nothing the king could do against them in the matter. 6. So they took YirmYâ ́huw and they had him thrown into the cistern of MalkkiyYâ ́huw the son of the king, that is in the courtyard of the prison, and they let down YirmYâ ́huw by ropes, but in the cistern there was no water but only mud, and YirmYâ ́huw sank down into the mud. 7. And Éveth-Mélekh the Kuwshíy, a minister of state, heard it when he was in the house of the king, that they had put YirmYâ ́huw into the cistern, but the king stayed in the gate of Binyâmín; 8. So he departed (from the house of the king) and he spoke to the king, saying: 9. "My sovereign the king, you have worked evil in what you have done to slay this man with hunger because there is no more bread in the city." 10. So the king commanded Éveth-Mélekh, saying: "Take by your authority from these thirty men and ye must raise him up from the cistern before he dies!" 11. So Éveth-Mélekh took the men by his authority and he came to the house of the king to underneath the storehouse and he took from there old rags and old ropes, and threw them to YirmYâ ́huw into the cistern. 12. And he said, "Put these (rags) upon the ropes," and YirmYâ ́huw did so. 13. Then they drew him up by the ropes, and they lifted him out of the cistern; but YirmYâ ́huw stayed in the courtyard of the prison;

TsithqiyYâ ́huw inquires yet again
14. Then the King dispatched and he took him to himself to the third entrance which is in the house of Yâ-hwéh, and the king said to YirmYâ ́huw, "I will ask you a question; do not conceal a word from me." 15. And YirmYâ ́huw said to the king, "When I tell it to you, won’t you surely kill me? And though I give you advice, you have never heeded me." 16. So the king swore an oath to him, saying, "As Yâ-hwéh lives, which worked this life for us, I will not kill you nor will I give you into the hand of those mortal men that are seeking your life." 17. And YirmYâ ́huw said to him, "Thus says Yâ-hwéh: "If you surely go out to the officials of the king of Bâvél, then your life shall live, and this city will not be burned with fire, and you will live: you and your house. 18. But if you do not go out, then this city shall be given into the hand of the Kasdíym and they will burn her with fire, and you, you shall not escape from their hand." 19. And the king said to YirmYâ ́huw, "I am fearing the Yâhuwthím which defected to the Kasdíym, lest they give me into their hand and they abuse me." 20. And YirmYâ ́huw said, "They will not give you over. Heed now the voice of Yâ-hwéh to what I am telling you and it shall go well for you and your life will live. 21. But if you are refusing to go out, this is the message that Yâ-hwéh has caused me to see: 22. And look, all of the wives that are left in the house of the king of Yâhuwthâ ́h are being brought out to the officials of the king of Bâvél and they are the ones saying, "The mortal men you were at peace with allured you and they prevailed over you, your feet were stuck in the mud, and they have been driven off backwards!" 23. Though all of your wives and children, are being brought out to the Kasdíym, yet you, you shall not escape from their hand because by the hand of the king of Bâvél you will be captured and this city will be burnt with fire." 24. Then the king said to him, "Do not let anyone know about these words and you will not die. 25. And if the officials hear that I had spoken with you and they come to you and they say to you, "Tell us now what you said to the king, do not conceal it from us and we will not kill you, and what did the king say to you?" 26. Then you will say to them: "I was pleading before the king to not send me back to the house of Yâhuwnâthâ ́n to die there." 27. And all of the officials came to YirmYâ ́huw and they questioned him and he reported to them as all of these things that the king had commanded, then they became deaf to him because the matter was not regarded. 28. So YirmYâ ́huw stayed in the courtyard of the prison until the day that Yruwshâláim was captured, and he was like that when Yruwshâláim was captured.

  1. And king TsithqiyYâ ́huw the son of Yo’shiyYâ ́huw reigned instead of Yâhuwyâqíym that Nvúwkhathne’tsTsár the king of Bâvél made king in the land of Yâhuwthâ ́h; 2. Though neither he nor his servants or the people of the land heeded the words of Yâ-hwéh which He dictated by the hand of YirmYâ ́huw, 3. Yet TsithqiyYâ ́huw the king dispatched Yâhuwkhál the son of ShelemYâ’huw and TsphanYâ ́huw the son of Ma'asëYâ ́hu the priest to YirmYâ ́huw saying, "Pray now on our behalf to Yâ-hwéh our Power!" 4.   1. And it happened while the forces of the Kasdíym withdrew from against Yruwshâláim due to the presence of the forces of Phar'óh; 12. And YirmYâ ́huw departed from Yruwshâláim to go to the land of Binyâmín to receive a portion from there from among the people; 13. And he was in the Gate of Binyâmín, but a lord (bá'al) of the guard was there, and his name was Yir’iyYâ ́hu the son of ShelemYâ ́hu the son of ChananYâ ́hu, and he arrested YirmYâ ́huw, saying: "You are defecting to the Kasdíym!" 14. King Yâhuwyâqíym burns first copy of YirmYâ ́huw’s scroll

  1. And it happened in the fourth year of Yâhuwyâqíym the son of Yo’shiyYâ ́huw the king of Yâhuwthâ ́h, the Word of Yâ-hwéh came to me, saying: 2. "Take for yourself a roll of a scroll and you shall write on her all of the words that I have dictated to you concerning Yisrâ’ë ́l and concerning Yâhuwthâ ́h and concerning all of the heathen masses from the day I dictated to you from the days of Yo’shiyYâ ́huw the king of Yâhuwthâ ́h even until this day. 3. Perhaps the house of Yâhuwthâ ́h may hear of all of the evil that I am the One planning to work on them in order that they may each turn from their evil way so I may exonerate for their iniquities and for their errors." 4. And YirmYâ ́huw called Bârúwkh the son of NëriyYâ ́huw, and Bârúwkh wrote from the mouth of YirmYâ ́huw all of the words of Yâ-hwéh that he dictated to him upon a roll of a scroll. 5. So the officials said to Bârúwkh, "Go, hide yourself and YirmYâ ́huw, and do not let anyone know where ye are." 20. And they came to the king in the courtyard, and they deposited the scroll in the chamber of ’Eliyshâmâ ́ the scribe and they reported all of these things in the ears of the king. 21. So the king dispatched Yâhuwthíy to fetch the roll, so he fetched it from the chamber of ’Eliyshâmâ ́ (the scribe), and Yâhuwthíy read it in the ears of the king and in the ears of all of the officials who were standing beside the king. 22. And the king was sitting in the winter house in the ninth month, and a fire was burning on the hearth before him; 23. And it happened as Yâhuwthíy read three columns or four, he tore it off with the penknife and threw it to the fire that was in the hearth until all of the roll was consumed on the fire that was on the hearth; 24. And the king and all of his servants who heard all of these words, they did not fear nor did they rend their garments; 25. And the Word of Yâ-hwéh was towards YirmYâ ́huw after the king burned the roll with the words that Bârúwkh had written from the mouth of YirmYâ ́huw, saying: 28. "Go back, take for yourself another scroll and write on it all of the words that were (at first) upon the (first) scroll which Yâhuwyâqíym the king of Yâhuwthâ ́h has burnt; 29. And to Yâhuwyâqíym the king of Yâhuwthâ ́h say, "Thus says Yâ-hwéh: You are who burned this scroll, saying, "For what reason did you write on her saying, 'Surely the king of Bâvél shall come and he shall destroy this land and he shall cause man and beast to cease from her'?" 30. Therefore, thus says Yâ-hwéh concerning Yâhuwyâqíym the king of Yâhuwthâ ́h: he shall not have one to sit upon the throne of Dâwíth; and it shall be his corpse, which shall be thrown out daily to the parching heat and nightly to the frost; 31. And I shall reckon upon him and upon his seed and upon his servants their iniquities, and I shall bring to pass upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Yruwshâláim and upon the land of Yâhuwthâ ́h, all of the evil that I did dictate against them though they did not heed it." 32. Then Bârúwkh took another roll and he wrote upon it from the mouth of YirmYâ ́huw all of the words of the scroll that Yâhuwyâqíym the king of Yâhuwthâ ́h had burnt (in the fire), and more messages, many ones like them were added to them.
