Time to get going

I propose that now is NOT the time to "understand" Trump supporters, a project aimed ultimately at crafting some properly pop-populist positioning to bolster the electoral prospects of the mommy wing of the American plutocracy. Even without the tipping point we just passed, voting for the not-evil-but-not-good Democratic Party was not a path to democracy. So while resisting tyranny is crucial, and voting for corporate VP mom over abusive, religious freak dad is often the best move to protect the weakest and align with those targeted for bullying, we need to be thinking bigger, or, rather, deeper. Now is a time for re-thinking basic values and what it means to live a good life and be a good person, a time to re-ignite our moral imaginations and accept the freedom and responsibility that comes with democracy. Now is a time to organize around shared values, find like-minded people near and far, and start creating new communities, all new kinds of communities, organized in ways we decide will best work for us -- "we" and "us" being defined by the members of the group creating the community. If democracy in America has a future, we will have to create it. Hobbling those efforts with a self-imposed need to convince Trump voters of the propriety of our democracy values over their elitist resentment, or accommodate their wounds of diminished privilege, just ties us to the mast of the sinking ship. They can follow behind if the rising water snaps them out of their fin-de-siecle derangement. We need to get going!
