15. Science Fiction again

My tolerance level for science fiction books is relatively high. So I read quite a lot of them without really liking it. I see myself as a kind of gold prospector digging through tons of mud always hoping to find one or two nuggets now and then. And it works. I draw the line at Perry Rhodan, of course, but often enough I really do find nuggets. Sometimes even diamonds.

I don't have much space left at home for storing books so some years ago I tried ebooks for the first time. And regarding science fiction pretty much all of my new books are now ebooks. One reason for that is that here in Berlin most small bookshops have closed pushed aside by germanwide book shops like thalia or hugendubel. These shops don't have much sf literature on show and at least some years ago they flatly refused to accept orders for special books in english (special just meaning books their main distributor didn't have in its catalogue). And another reason for ebooks was that back then I hadn't yet discovered the glorious book shop Otherland.

So now most of my sf books come in english, and since they are relatively cheap compared to german ebooks I can afford to read quite a lot.

And one of this lot was this author. I love the way she tells the story, I love the setting. I really adore what she has made of the premisses of the setting. I was so enthused that I tried to nudge some colleagues of mine to read these books, too. Well, they were bored ...

Nonetheless, now I bore you.

Ok, it’s not literature. It’s not even a real book, or books. But it impressed me mightily during my adolescence. So it fits at least a litte into this challenge.

14. Stupid And Stupid

I liked comic books a lot as a kid. The standard Disney stuff was despised by my parents so they never got me these as a present exept of the times when I was seriously sick. But I didn’t like it too much myself. I could borrow the Disney stuff from friends and give it back after reading. I never needed to own it. That was different with other comic books: Asterix, Lucky Luke, Tim und Struppi (Les aventure de Tintin), Lieutenant Blueberry, Jeremiah, Yoko Tsuno, Franquin and these comics here. Them I needed to possess! So I spent quite a big part of my pocket money on comic books. This was only possible for me because most of them didn’t appear on a regular basis and some were even only availabe during our holidays in France (when my parents ramped up my pocket money considerably due to holidays and learning foreign languages and such …)

And I never liked superheros. You know, the stuff the late Stan Lee became famous for. I really hated this kind of cartoons. I mean, come one, heroes in tights, with a cape and a mask with stupid cat ears attached! Undressing in telephone booths. And always saying thins like: POW, SCREECH, JUMP, CRASH and so on. Really ridiculous! I still don’t like this stuff today. I’m always offendend when Netflix tries to push me to watching Marvel superheroes’ series only because they figured out that I like science fiction. And had accidentally watched Jessica Jones …

There is one exception to that rule (isn’t there always?). When I discovered these comic books I fell in love. There are superheroes in them. My parents hated them but my brother and me adored them. They took the biggest part of my pocket money because they appeared on a regular basis (monthly, I think).

After finishing school and after my time in the army I started my first attempt at studying and moved out of my parents’ house. I grew up. Became an adult. Didn’t need this stupid cartoon stuff any more. Adults don’t need this. So I gave my full collection to my brother. He was extremely happy about it. One year later I realized that this decision might have been a little too rash. I missed these comic books. But I also realized that there was no socially acceptable or even legal way to pry them back out ouf my brother’s hands. So I had to resort to buying them all over again. I never even came close to my original collection.

I was told that these comic books are of the rare kind where some german translations might be better than the original version (translations and translators changed over time). Due to lack of knowledge of the original’s language I can’t say if this is true. These comic made me try learning their language at school, but I gave up very soon. They were extremely good as they were in german.

Und ein weiteres schönes Buch. Vielleicht sollte man auch mal zur Abwechslung ein wirklich mieses Buch hier mit einbringen? Heute aber nicht!

13. Neue Welten

Wenn ich versuche mich daran zu erinnern, woher ich meine Bücher habe, dann wird es etwas schwierig. Über die Schule sind mir genau zwei Bücher in Erinnerung geblieben, Franz Werfel und Sempé. Durch meine Eltern habe ich bestimmt einige Bücher vermittelt bekommen, aber ich könnte beim besten Willen nicht mehr sagen, welche das waren. Viele wurden mir von Freunden und Bekannten ans Herz gelegt, aber mindestens genau so viele habe ich über Buchempfehlungen in den Medien kennengelernt. Oft haben sich Bücher auch selbst weiterempfohlen, ein guter Autor führte zu einem ähnlichen Autor. All diese Auswahlverfahren bergen die Gefahr in sich, dass man in einer Filterblase der Literatur bleibt. Man findet nur neues, das zu dem passt, was man schon kennt. Schließlich würden kaum gute Freunde einen begeisterten Perry-Rhodan-Leser dazu zwingen, einen Gedichtband von Gottfried Benn zu lesen? Einerseits vielleicht gute Freunde, aber wohl eher ehemalige Freunde.

Einige Bücher habe ich zufällig gefunden. Gekauft, weil mich irgendetwas ansprach, der Titel, der Einband oder die Haptik, oder weil ich mich vollkommen geirrt habe, total vergriffen im Bücherkauf. Das Werk hier ist so eines. Ich habe den Titel gelesen, fand ihn sehr interessant und habe ihn völlig fehlinterpretiert. Das Buch war dann wirklich großartig. Es war ganz anders als erwartet und hat mir wieder mal eine neue Weltgegend der Literatur eröffnet. Das kann ich nur leider nicht im Original lesen, aber die Übersetzungen scheinen recht gut zu sein.

12. Satire oder Zeuge

Das Buch hier hatte ich schon mal in meiner Jugend angefangen (hach ... damals) und es dann ziemlich genervt wieder weggelegt. Ich brauchte es nicht für die Schule. Und dann diese komisch verquaste Sprache. Also, nicht gut.

Irgendwann später, im Alter, habe ich es wohl aus Versehen, oder weil ich damit angeben wollte, so etwas gelesen zu haben, mit in einen Urlaub genommen. Dort habe ich es dann tatsächlich bis zum Ende durchgelesen, auch noch nachdem der Urlaub vorbei war. Ich konnte überhaupt nicht mehr verstehen, was mich an dieser gedrechselten, altertümlichen, poetischen Sprache damals so abgestoßen hatte. Vermutlich hatte ich als Jugendlicher einfach einen schlechten Büchergeschmack, wie so viele Jugendliche heutzutage.

Hinterher las ich mal irgendwo, dieses Buch solle eine Satire sein. Vermutlich war das irgendwie literaturtheoretisch gemeint, satirisch finde ich es eigentlich gar nicht. In einem meiner vergeblichen Studiengänge habe ich dann auch noch gehört, das Buch sei eine gute Quelle für seine Zeit. Das glaube ich gerne.

Es ist alt und es hat Spaß gemacht, es zu lesen. Vielleicht versuche ich mich bald mal an einer nicht so verhochdeutschten Version. Wenn ich mit meinen anderen Büchern durch bin bestimmt!

11. Was wäre, wenn?

Keine Ahnung, ob so etwas zählt, aber es hat mit echt beeindruckt, diese kleine Büchlein. Ich habe es von meinem Bruder geschenkt bekommen, als der mich mal besuchte. Wir trafen uns in einer Kneipe und er hat mir dieses Buch überreicht. Nach 5 Minuten wäre ich fast vom Barhocker gefallen.

Ich finde, es passt irgendwie zu dem Datum gestern und entfernt zu morgen.

10. Phantastische Literatur

Ich finde den Begriff Science Fiction manchmal ziemlich problematisch. Vor allen Dingen, wenn er auf Geschichten angewendet wird, die zwar irgendwie utopisch sind, aber mit Science im amerikanische Sinne nicht viel zu tun haben. Fantasy sind Geschichten, die vor allem in einem modern zurechtgemachten Märchen-Umfeld angesiedelt sind. Wie bezeichnet man aber Geschichten, die zwischen diesen Beschreibungen liegen? Bei Suhrkamp gab es mal eine Reihe, die sich Phantastische Bibliothek nannte, nicht im Sinne von großartig sondern mit der Bedeutung von utopisch und erfunden. Leider fallen darunter wohl auch irgendwelche komischen Gespenstergeschichten, die mir persönlich nicht so liegen.

Ich kann also nicht sagen, welchem Genre dieser Text hier zugeordnet werden kann. Er ist mir vor Jahren beim Stöbern untergekommen, der Titel hat mich sehr angesprochen. Der Inhalt war dann ziemlich anders als erwartet, hat mir aber sehr gefallen. Ich habe danach noch mehrere Bücher dieses Autors gelesen, ein paar waren großartig, einige nicht so sehr.

Dieses Werk hier kann ich aber voll und ganz empfehlen.

9. Long Storytelling

I knew this author before I ran into this work. I liked his writing and was really happy finding a new book of his, unknown to me. It was part of a series and promised long readin fun. I read the first part in a german translation. I loved it.

When I had finished it the second part hadn't been translated yet so I had to resort to my english skills and read part two in its original english version. A glorious book!

After having finished this I had to wait for about 2 years (or so) until part three showed up. Unluckily I nearly had forgotten what had happened in book one. So I reread book one this time also as its english original. I liked both a lot.

Only three or four years later the fourth part appeared, the final one of this series. By then my memory of part one and two was only vague so i reread both before starting part four.

Years later when i found a sort of follow up story i read all first four books again. They are still great! Fantastic storytelling even though the author made me read the first book four times over.

And there is an absolutely fantastic german radio show made from these books, even though it's not as long as the real story ...
