Before I refused to serve and spent 110 days in prison, people tried to convince me to join the army so I could be the "nice soldier" at the checkpoints. They believed I could make a difference in how Palestinians were treated and many served in the army for that reason. As if the oppression, occupation or massacre can be moral if the soldiers were more moral. The truth is, there is no moral form of oppression. It is not about individual soldiers or units in the West Bank or Gaza and how they treat the Palestinians, it is the fact that there are soldiers there in the first place. The whole Israeli military is responsible for systematic oppression, occupation, massacre in Gaza and ethnic cleansing.

--- Mattan Helman, from the Israeli group Refuser Solidarity Network, in the article The problem is not a specific soldier, it is the entire army

Call for Conscientious Objection by Mothers Against Violence in Israel

We, Mothers Against Violence, call on our children to refuse regular and reserve #army service in the occupied territories, for the following reasons
* Israeli law stipulates that the army’s presence in the occupied territories is “temporary”. The 56 years that have elapsed since the #occupation began, have made it, for all intents and purposes, “permanent”. Therefore, without an official government decision specifying otherwise, service in the occupied territories is #illegal.
* The current heads of the army and security services declared in June that settler #violence against Palestinians is “nationalist terrorism”. Despite this, army soldiers are still providing security for violent settlers. This puts them at risk of arrest and trial abroad, and #traumatizes them for life.
* The #anti-democratic legislation just passed by this government removes judicial checks and balances on government decisions, enabling the government to give the army unreasonable and illegal orders, and compounding the risk of international prosecution for the soldiers.

In the newsletter Mattan Helman (from RSN) mentions this:

Its boldness is remarkable. By making an explicit public call for refusal, they have put themselves in danger of prosecution for sedition.

Stand with the Israelis fighting for democracy

Please sign this petition: https://www.democracy.refuser.org/

Since the beginning of the year, an extreme right-wing government led by Benjamin Netanyahu has rammed through radical legislation that risks turning Israel into a far-right dictatorship.

In protest, hundreds of thousands of Israelis have launched a massive pro-democracy civil resistance movement, unprecedented in Israeli history for its size and strength.

Now is a critical moment to show global support — to encourage the protesters not to back down. We must come together to show the movement bravely resisting dictatorship that the world is watching and that they have our support.

Netanyahu’s legislation is designed to give the government unchecked power over the judiciary, enabling full annexation of the West Bank, undermining the rights of women and members of the LGBTQ+ community, restricting religious freedom, and facilitating even more oppression of Palestinians living under Israeli rule and military occupation.

To the Israeli civil resistance movement:

We stand with you, the Israelis who are taking to the streets, blocking major highways, disrupting politicians, and on strike from your jobs.

We stand with you, the thousands of Israeli reserve soldiers — among you hundreds of combat pilots and special forces operatives — who have joined the resistance by announcing you will refuse service. You are turning the tide against Netanyahu’s far-right agenda.

We stand with you, as you face fierce backlash from the Israeli government — calling you, the protesters, “anarchists” and “foreign agents”. We stand with you as you face violence from right-wing gangs, who are attacking your protests more and more.

We stand with you, and we call on all people of conscience to stand in solidarity with you, the Israeli resistance movement. We stand with you in your struggle for a true democracy for all. You are not alone.

We continue our updates on the massive refusal wave by reserve soldiers in Israel. [...]

The Israeli public is showing unprecedented support for the political act of refusal to serve in the Israeli army. Ynet News published the results of a survey by the aChord Center with the headline “unprecedented support for reserve service refusers”, showing incredibly strong support for the reserve soldiers refusal actions and statements. Of Israeli citizens, 87% of those identifying as left-wing voters, 70% of those identifying as centre and 31% of those identifying as right-wing voters support the new soldiers who are refusing military service.

Refusal to serve in the Israeli army, one of the most sacred institutions in Israeli culture, is now perceived as a legitimate civil resistance act which can be used to promote change. This is an incredible opportunity for the anti-occupation movement. Local Israeli anti-occupation activists are now working on initiatives to support the refusers and to use this historical moment of massive civil resistance against the ultra-nationalistic government and its anti-democratic agenda. Our aim is to help the Israeli mainstream public become a part of the anti-occupation movement.

This is the time for us to use this awakening in the Israeli society and to support local activists in their efforts to end the occupation. We need your help to do that. What the Israeli refuser movement needs now is people who can help us amplify the refusers’ voice. This is the time to expand our community. Please share this link with three people you know and ask them to join our newsletter. This is a once in a generation opportunity and we need to work together to make sure we use it as best as we can.

In solidarity,

Breaking news: The refusers forced the Israeli government to delay the judicial coup! | Refuser Solidarity Network

We are writing this quickly, as events are unfolding on the ground.

Weeks-long wave of refusal and civil resistance forced the Israeli government yesterday (Monday) to postpone the #anti-democratic judicial coup! Due to the refusers' pressure, on Saturday, the minister of defense, Yoav Galant, had a press conference and announced his opposition to the judicial #coup, citing voices of #dissent in the army as the major reason for his break with his own party and the government. As a result, the prime minister, Netanyahu, fired him on Sunday. The firing led to a huge backlash: mass #protests, a general #strike by universities and trade unions, the blocking of roads across the country and the shutdown of the airport. All this forced the government to postpone the judicial coup. And it all started with the refusers.

Earlier this week the Israeli press overflowed with daily refusal statements and civil resistance announcements. Each day hundreds of reserve soldiers protested against the government and declared their refusal to continue to serve in the Israeli army. Among them are soldiers of the Intelligence Corps soldiers, doctors, combat pilots and more. In a letter sent to the Israeli defense minister, soldiers of the Intelligence Corps wrote:

“Our conscience does not allow us to cooperate with the attempts to change the regime In Israel. An undemocratic Israel is a weak Israel which is dangerous to minorities within it, an Israel with a failing economic system. Our love for the country and the many years we spent serving it compel us to resist.”

The act of refusal also worked its way to different sectors of the #army and the Israeli society. 700 Soldiers in the standing army sent out official letters to the minister of defense and the Commander-in-Chief of the Israeli army stating that they will resign from service. Parents of soldiers to be facing mandatory #conscription have reconsidered sending their children to serve in the army and a group of 40 soldiers currently serving their mandatory conscription filmed a video vowing not to serve an undemocratic government.

On Friday, the Israeli army Commander-in-Chief warned that the Israeli army is disintegrating and that military operations are at risk due to massive amounts of refusals caused by the judicial coup. Israeli prime minister Netanyahu addressed the unprecedented crisis the army is facing and mentioned that refusing to serve in the military is a great danger to Israel.

The refusal wave puts the government in an unparalleled #crisis, and this crisis is a huge #opportunity. This represents a massive crack in the Israeli mainstream’s conviction that the army is used purely for defense. It is a moment of deep change in the worldviews of the Israeli citizenry, that could allow the anti-occupation movement to show Israelis that a democracy only for some people, is not a democracy at all.

Although this could be a time to celebrate decades of hard work leading to a moment of success, the fight is far from over. The reforms have only been postponed and not canceled. Netanyahu called for the army to punish the #refusers, and to get the majority needed to approve a delay in the legislation, Netanyahu promised an ultra-nationalist party to create a new “national guard” under the control of Itamar Ben Gvir, the leader of an extreme #right-wing party. All this means that leveraging the protests to fight the occupation is a challenge, and there is no democracy without an end to the #occupation.

Refuser Solidarity Network continues to support local Israeli refusers. We support efforts to use this moment to expand the anti-occupation movement and continue the fight to bring an end to the occupation.
