The Necks | In Session at Sydney Opera House

The award-winning band The New York Times called “the greatest trio on earth” perform live in the Utzon Room, performing their singular mix of avant rock, jazz and ambient music in a unique single-take performance.

'In Session' is a series of intimate, long-form music films, staged behind closed doors. In taking a highly stylised filmic approach, 'In Session' goes beyond the confines of a traditional performance film, giving audiences an entirely unique and close-up perspective on their favourite artists.

The Necks - Live in Concert

It’s hard to pinpoint how The Necks sound because they sound like nothing and everything all at once. Their minimalistic, repetitive improvisation with piano, drums and bass sounds like it's coming from one single, new never-heard-before instrument. The Necks can be delicately quiet where the slightest contact between a drumstick and a cymbal will take the music in a totally new direction, and they can come at you loud and fierce. They are a very rare musical experience.

This concert was filmed at Jazzhouse in Copenhagen and The Necks perform a piece called “Ohioan”.

THE NECKS - 30th Anniversary Concert @ Jazzhouse, Copenhagen (16th of November, 2016)

The Necks are an Australian avante-garde jazz trio formed in 1987 by founding mainstays Chris Abrahams on piano and Hammond organ, Tony Buck on drums, percussion and electric guitar, and Lloyd Swanton on bass guitar and double bass. They play improvisational pieces of up to an hour in length that explore the development and demise of repeating musical figures. Their double LP studio album Unfold was named by Rolling Stone as "one of the top 20 avant albums of 2017."
