Today's feature animal is ready for the Carnival Parade! Named the Ocellated Turkey, this stunning bird resides primarily in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico, as well as in parts of Belize and Guatemala. A generalist in terms of its feeding habits, it is known  to feed on a wide variety of forage. It spends most of the time on the ground and often prefers to run to escape danger rather than fly, though they can fly swiftly and powerfully over short distances. Roosting is usually high in trees away from night-hunting predators.

Failed taxidermy project? Nay nay, and don't be fooled by its wonky looks; the Tibetan Fox is a cunning hunter that is extremely well adapted to the high altitude plateaus it inhabits. This species of true fox is found across Tibet, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, as well as parts of China and India. Unlike most foxes, it is most active during daytime, when its favorite meal, the pika, is up and about. It often hunts solo, but bonded pairs may hunt together, or it may join a brown bear in its hunt, grabbing any pika that escapes the bear as it digs them out. To hide from predators in these treeless slopes, it lives in burrows, often stolen from marmots, as it is not a great digger itself.

Although declared extinct in the wild in 2019, not all hope is lost for the Spix's Macaw. This gorgeous bird once inhabited the drainage basin of the São Francisco River, in Brazil. It had a very restricted natural habitat due to its dependence on a particular tree species. The 2011 animated movie Rio actually portrayed the story of the supposed last pair of Spix's macaws. Thankfully, the species is now maintained through captive breeding programs, and efforts are being made to restore its natural habitat and reintroduce it to the wild. Mating for life, a pair typically also enjoys sharing food and mutual grooming.

With their iridescent blues and stylish crests, the Blue Jay and the Steller's Jay are two of the most stunning birds of North America. Together, they form the genus Cyanocitta, and because they sometimes interbreed, their status as distinct species has been contested. While the Steller's jay inhabits the mountain chain system along the Pacific coast, the blue jay is spread through southern Canada and most of the eastern and central United States. They feed on a variety of seeds, nuts, berries, fruits, and occasionally prey on small animals. When the time comes for a female to find a mate, she will gather a dozen males and have them compete to keep up with her flying around all day, until only one remains. The two then bond for life.

After getting its hair did and putting on lipstick, the Great Blue Turaco looks ready to go out for an evening of fine dining. For this bird, this translates to foraging in small groups for flowers, fruits, and leaves. Recent studies revealed that it is more closely related to go-away-birds and plantain-eaters than it is to other species of turacos, though they are all part of the same family of gregarious, non-migratory birds endemic to Africa. This particular species is widespread throughout the African tropical rainforest, and at 30 inches in length, it is the largest species of turaco.

Put a bear's head on a dachshund's body, and you'll get something pretty close to a Bush Dog. One of the smallest and rarest wild canines, it is the only living species of its genus, and its closest relatives are the maned wolf and the African wild dog. Endemic to Central and South America, this elusive diurnal predator usually lives in small packs. Together, a pack of these tiny ankle-nippers can take down much larger prey, like peccaries, rheas and capybaras, but they typically hunt rodents like pacas, agoutis, and acouchis. As also seen in some breeds of dogs, their partially webbed toes make them great swimmers.

Ever dreamt of having a miniature dragon as a pet? The Red-eyed Crocodile Skink could be just that, though you have to be okay with feeding it live bugs. Endemic to the tropical rainforests of New Guinea, this 10-inch dragon has a lifespan of 5 to 12 years, and is one of the few lizards that can vocalize when in distress. An excellent climber and swimmer, it is rather shy and spends most of its time among the leaf litter on the forest floor. If startled, it will freeze and play dead, and if that doesn't work, it may drop its tail to make a diversion while it skitters away.

The Spanish Moon Moth is not only absolutely astonishing, it is basically a relic from the ice age. The conditions in the small areas of the Pyrenees where it is found have remained stable, unchanged, for a few million years, allowing the small remnant populations of this moth to survive in these small habitats virtually unchanged. Small populations of the species can now be found in France and Switzerland, but those are consequences of more recent human actions. At the caterpillar stage, it is quite a picky eater and primarily feeds on the needles of only two species of pine trees.
