I have recently "made" ( or assembled ) two electric guitars, but also became fascinated with the pickups - the electromagnetic transducers of string vibration to signal. I wanted to "roll my own". The most immediate problem there is, while the parts are easy to obtain, the desired winding of the copper wire on the pickup coil is very difficult to achieve without expensive equipment.

Interestingly, there has been a good amount of experimentation and design implementation using various types of magnets - but very little of such work has been done with the coil wire (for a number of reasons). I discovered that Litz wire should be quite suitable for this purpose - and since it is composed of multiple strands (woven in parallel), it can be done by hand - requiring only a few hundred turns rather than a few thousand. So - I made my first one today!

Precursor: Mobile, Open Hardware, RISC-V System-on-Chip (SoC) Development Kit

https://www.crowdsupply.com/sutajio-kosagi/precursor/updates/introducing

Transparency is the bedrock of trust. Understanding what makes a thing tick gives us an evidence-based reason to trust that it works as intended. Precursor is unique in that, instead of a CPU, it uses reconfigurable hardware – an FPGA – for computation. This means you can compile our reference CPU design from source, instead of simply having to accept on faith that this black epoxy rectangle contains precisely the circuits it advertises.

You can probably install Chrome OS Flex on your EOL Chromebook

https://www.androidpolice.com/chrome-os-flex-on-eol-chromebooks/

The process of installing Chrome OS Flex on your old Chromebook is not as straightforward as with Macs and Windows PCs, though. To try it out, you first need to disable firmware write protection

Google, has taken steps to lock you out of your hardware.
