July 9 - World Beyond War Peace Almanac

On this day in 1955, Albert Einstein, Bertrand Russell and seven other scientists warned that a choice must be made between war and human survival. Distinguished scientists the world over, including Max Born of Germany, and French Communist Frederic Joliot-Curie, joined Albert Einstein and Bertrand Russell in an attempt to abolish war. The Manifesto, the last document Einstein signed before his death, read: “In view of the fact that in any future world war nuclear weapons will certainly be employed, and that such weapons threaten the continued existence of mankind, we urge the governments of the world to realize, and to acknowledge publicly, that their purpose cannot be furthered by a world war, and we urge them, consequently, to find peaceful means for the settlement of all matters of dispute between them.” Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara expressed his own fear that a nuclear catastrophe was inevitable unless nuclear arsenals were dismantled, noting: “The average U.S. warhead has a destructive power 20 times that of the Hiroshima bomb. Of the 8,000 active or operational U.S. warheads, 2,000 are on hair-trigger alert…The U.S. has never endorsed the policy of ‘no first use,’ not during my seven years as secretary or since. We have been and remain prepared to initiate the use of nuclear weapons–by the decision of one person, the president….the president is prepared to make a decision within 20 minutes that could launch one of the most devastating weapons in the world. To declare war requires an act of Congress, but to launch a nuclear holocaust requires 20 minutes’ deliberation by the president and his advisors.”

And Russia today is a nation that is at the pointy end of the American nuclear spear. They're seeing the United States promulgate policies that have American military capabilities thrust up to the very borders of Russia, indeed crossing over into the borders of Russia, threatening Russia's strategic nuclear enterprise: Early warning radars, command and control facilities, even nuclear weapons depot and nuclear launch systems. We have facilitated - we be in the United States - an attack against Engels airbase where Russian strategic nuclear bombers are stationed. Under Russian doctrine this alone justifies a nuclear response. We've been tickling the Russian nuclear bear for a long time and only through the patience and wisdom of the Russian leadership have we avoided a nuclear war.

It is the Empire's fault, it is the United States of America's fault. We have abrogated every treaty regime pertinent to nuclear weapons. We did it. We even caused the last and ultimate one - new start - to not be looked on favorably for renewal by Moscow because of our actions in Ukraine. So we have abated every single protective treaty environment that we painstakingly crafted over the many years of the Cold War. Nuclear weapons are free to roam.

Clearly a case could be made, and indeed there are many Russian political observers and commentators inside Russia who make this case, that the red line has already been crossed by the United States, by Ukraine, in attacking Russia with these American weapons; that Russia already has a prima facie case to use nuclear weapons in accordance with its doctrine. But what Putin has done here is tone it down, to ratchet it down, to calm things down, and to say "No we haven't met that yet". This is extraordinary leadership, this is escalation management. Every American needs to thank Vladimir Putin for his maturity because otherwise we may not be here tomorrow.

What we need to do is realize that the problem is with us. Identify the enemy: The enemy is us. The deal [peace deal from Putin] is out there, the deterrence is there. [W]e the people need to stand up get the truth out and make sure our politicians don't bring us to the brink of non-existence.

If we train F-16 pilots in Poland [...] or train them in the Baltic states or whatever, they're legitimate targets. They are legitimate targets under the rules of war. That is to say they're training to go to Ukraine and drop bombs on shoot airplanes down whatever of Russia. So you're in your perfect right to go after that training facility, that logistics facility, or whatever. Now that pertains to all the countries, Germany, France, Poland, wherever there are people being trained, or equipment being readied, or refueled, or refurbished, or whatever, for the war in Ukraine. Russia has disregarded that to this point. But they are in their perfect right in terms of the rules of warfare to go after those facilities. And it would not be expanding the war to NATO, not in the strict sense of the law. They're going after facilities in those countries that are aiding and abetting the prosecution of war against them by the state of Ukraine. And that's legit.
[...]
We are just opening up Pandora's Box here, and Joe Biden and Jake Sullivan and Anthony Blinken are stupid men, they are stupid men, they are walking this country and vassal states like England and Europe into a war, a much bigger more dangerous war, a war that has every prospect eventually of leading to an exchange of nuclear weapons. This is just insanity. When I was talking to these mid-level bureaucrats today I thought I would probably get you know sort of a look of he's crazy on their face, at least some of them, no I got head nods, you know. They understand what this is about, they understand the difficulty and the danger, and they understand the lack of leadership the lack of coherent good leadership at the very top.
