It depends on the script, I'm guessing. Even the renowned Bert Williams, Black star of the Zigfield Follies, did blackface but he used it to make social commentary in an era when all a Black had to do was look sideways to get lynched, if that. Williams ever so subtlely "flipped the script".
Some whites used blackface to make Blacks be taken for buffoons but there were some whites who, generally speaking, used blackface and "cultural appropriation" for the purpose of interjecting the material to an otherwise unreceptive white bigoted audience who would have rejected the material out of hand if it were performed authentically by a Black. White folk have a problem with white folk who are bigots and anti-bigot White folk recognize Black arts for the good material that it is, and that dates back to the era of classical music, when blues/jazz themes were included in compositions.
I can see Billy Dee's point but I can also see the point of removing hateful stuff out of our culture; but making that distinction depends on the material on a case-by-case basis. We still do have white bigots among us and we can always depend on them to always get the wrong idea.
