ETIQUETTE

He arrived at my invitation.
He was taught to be kind, polite, and respectful of ladies.
Not too much time or effort was expected of him today.
A little chat, smiles and a sip of something. And then he must go.
As etiquette required, he stood up and placed his napkin on his chair.
It's a signal to the waiter that he's finished. Nothing more was needed.
I don't want to look up to see he's not there.
A slight scent of him lingers in the air ~
it's mingled with the scent of the carnations on the table.
As etiquette requires, I'll not send him another invitation
and put him ill at ease, in an awkward situation.
My affections are not returned. I must gracefully exit,
even if shattered.
What should I leave on The Chair Of Our Relationship?
What signal that I'm finished, and nothing more is needed?
Ah. Yes. A carnation, like him, beautiful, with its scent of love.
