African #elephants #call each other and respond to #individual #names — something that few #wild #animals do, according to new #research published Monday.
enter image description here
The names are one part of elephants’ low rumbles that they can hear over long distances across the savanna. Scientists believe that animals with complex social structures and family groups that separate and then reunite often may be more likely to use individual names.

“If you’re looking after a large family, you’ve got to be able to say, ‘Hey, Virginia, get over here!’” said Duke University ecologist Stuart Pimm, who was not involved in the study.

It’s extremely rare for wild animals to call each other by unique names. Humans have names, of course, and our dogs come when their names are called. Baby dolphins invent their own names, called signature whistles, and parrots may also use names. #wildlife #mammals #elephants

Sperm Whale Asks Divers For Help Removing Trash Tangled In Its Mouth

Imagine that dental floss is attached to a bunch of old food and other stuff, wrapped around the bottom of your jaw, and you don’t have any arms. Are you imagining it? Well, you might have an inkling of how a sperm whale felt in the Indian Ocean.

The poor creature approached a group of divers, seemingly asking for help.

The whale swam directly up to them, mouth agape and dragging all sort of detritus. When the diver cautiously approached it, it left its mouth open and allowed her to pluck the tangled pile out, piece by piece.

A large portion of Karkhe national park in Kuzestan province of Iran that is one of the last remaining home of the extremely endangered Iranian deer was burned during the last few days forest fires.

It is a huge loss for the wildlife conservation in the country and west Asia.

While chasing this butterfly around with my camera yesterday, I was reminded how I briefly amused myself with a homemade butterfly net. Hmmm ... I'm not sure it was homemade, that memory is a bit eroded, but I think I might have had one made of material from a nylon stocking. Do you think that we think in binary? I mean the messages our brain sends and receives must be that way.  Anyway, back on the track, this is a Tiger Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio glaucus). I posted a photo a few days ago of one at a great distance on a green field.

I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best.  Some don't make the cut.  I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

A program of reproduction in captivity started over 20 yrs ago when there were less than 30 marmots in the wilderness. Learn more (& donate if you can) here: https://marmots.org/

For now, Bramble is hanging around close to the nest site, but will shortly begin to wander further afield in search of a territory. Bramble is now adept at catching food, including flies & fast-moving spiders, so stands a good chance of survival.
