New Zealand Greens MP Efeso Collins has died after running in a charity event in Auckland.

The 49-year-old collapsed on Wednesday morning in Auckland after running in the ChildFund Water Run, a fundraiser for Pacific communities.

He received medical treatment on the scene at Auckland's Britomart, according to TVNZ, with screens erected to shield him from public view.

The Greens confirmed the news 'with profound shock and sadness' at 10.45am.

'We are absolutely devastated. A beautiful family has lost a dedicated father, husband, and community leader,' co-leaders James Shaw and Marama Davidson said in a statement.

'Aotearoa and the Green Party have lost one of the kindest, most dedicated champions of fairness and equality.'

The Greens thanked the on-site medical team who 'immediately went to Efeso's aid and did everything they could to revive him'.

Mr Collins, a south Auckland man of Samoan and Tokelauan heritage, was new to parliament but no stranger to Kiwi politics.

He served on Auckland council from 2016 until 2022, when he was a high-profile candidate for the mayoralty.

He lost that race but won Greens preselection and entered parliament in 2023.

Mr Collins gave his inaugural speech last week, saying he addressed the house with 'an indescribable feeling' as the son of Samoan migrants.

He dedicated his speech to alleviating poverty, quoting James Baldwin, Paolo Freire and the Bible.

'There's a saying in Samoan: 'E le tu fa'amauga se tagata' - no one stands alone, no one succeeds alone - and, for me, no one suffers alone,' he said.

'It's hard to be poor, it's expensive to be poor, and moreover, public discourse is making it socially unacceptable to be poor.

'Whether it's bashing on beneficiaries, dragging our feet towards a living wage, throwing shade on school breakfast programmes, or restricting people's ability to collectively bargain for fairer working conditions, we must do better to lift aspirations and the lived realities of all our people.'

Prime Minister Chris Luxon, Labour leader Chris Hipkins and his deputy Carmel Sepoluni, also an Aucklander of Samoan descent, offered condolences.

'Efeso was a good man, always friendly and kind, and a true champion and advocate for his Samoan and South Auckland communities,' Mr Luxon said.

'Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go to his family, his community and colleagues.'

As a mark of respect, parliament is expected to be cancelled on Wednesday, with leaders to make short statements at 2pm before abandoning business for the day.

  • Motorsport community 'gutted' by death of Cameron Bartholomew
  • Father-of-three, 28, remembered as a 'larrikin' with a 'heart of gold'

Australian motorsport champion Cameron Bartholomew has died suddenly aged 28.

His fiancee Chloe O'Carroll, who shares three young children with the Hyundai Excel state champion, announced his sudden passing on social media.

'With the heaviest of hearts we announce that heaven gained another angel this morning,' she wrote on Thursday.

'Our beloved Cameron Bartholomew has passed away and we are in complete shock.

'Understandably we are heart broken and are spending this time as a family to support one another during this difficult time. We respectfully ask for privacy whilst we grieve and reminisce the life that we were so lucky to share with Cam.

'For those that had the pleasure of knowing and being touched by Cameron's presence there will be memorial details shared in time.'

Ms O'Carroll shared a series of photos of the Brisbane driver posing with his young children and celebrating a win on the top of a racing car.

'He was a true talent behind the wheel and gave me such a pleasure to call his racing,' one man wrote on her post.

'He was also a young mate to many of us in motorsport and we took pleasure in assisting his challenges and helped him make a name for himself.

'There are so many people today who I've spoken with who are devastated beyond belief. He was a son, a husband and a dad who had such an incredible future.'

Friends and people from his motorsport community shared tributes to the driver, with his former co-driver Jayden James Peacock writing he was 'gutted'.

'Glad I got the opportunity years ago to go Porsche racing with KPH racing crewing with Cameron. We were both only babies but made some damn good memories. From there we become good mates,' he wrote.

'Love ya, mate, rest easy. Our thoughts are with Chloe the kids and family.'

Fellow driver Brock Giblin said he was 'absolutely heartbroken'.

'Cameron Bartholomew was one of the first I messaged 11 years ago when I first started racing cars, to lose him today is just nothing short of shattering,' he wrote.

'My deepest condolences and thoughts go out to his family. I'm going to miss you heaps mate. #95Forever.'

Series X3 Club Queensland described the 28-year-old who was also known as 'Chicken Hawk', as a 'larrikin with a heart of gold'.

'It is with immense sadness that we announce the sudden, unexpected, and tragic passing of one of our own racing family, Cam Bartholomew.

'He will be deeply missed. Vale Cam! Series X3 Qld offers our deepest condolences to Glen, Chris, Chloe and their families.'

Track Attack Australia also shared a tribute to the young driver.

'So very sad to hear today that one of the very earliest TAA Excel family passed away suddenly last night.

'RIP Cameron 'chicken hawk' Bartholomew. Taken too early and all of our thoughts are with Chloe, their children, the extended Bartholomew family and close friends.

'Cam was a brilliant steerer and fierce competitor but lit up any conversation and always had a smile on his face.

'The TAA family would like to pass on its sincere condolences.'

In #Gujarat, the number of deaths due to #heartattack is #increasing day by day.

Most of the people are seen dying of heart attack while playing cricket.
Just a note about cricket, for those reading who may not know much about the game.

As in baseball, one whole team is in the field (to catch or retrieve the ball when hit), while the other team takes their turn at batting. When fielding, it's very typical for someone to be standing relatively still for fairly long periods of time, punctuated by very #sudden bursts of fast reactive movement (leaping or sprinting) from a standing or crouching position. (In this way, it's actually very different from football.) It seems likely to me that this sudden impact on a #vaxx-compromised heart is what's causing the #tragic #problems.

#Dr. Harriet #Hall, Staunch Critic of Anti-vaxxers and Alternative #natural #Medicine, #Dies in Her Sleep

Dr. Harriet “The SkepDoc” Hall, an author of a science medicine blog #slamming the #anti-vaxxers and critic of alternative medicine, #died #suddenly in her sleep last week.

Dr. Hall is a retiredAir Force physician and flight surgeon who writes about pseudoscience and questionable medical practices.

“This is Kirk Hall, Harriet’s husband. I know Harriet’s work was followed and admired by many of you. It is with great sadness that I must tell you my beloved wife passed away quietly and unexpectedly in her sleep last night,” Harriet’s husband wrote on Facebook.

“At this moment, she would probably simply ask you to have a kind thought for her, be kind to each other and continue to support her belief in the truth,” the post added.

Dr. Harriet Hall was a proponent of the vaccination mandate and against all-natural remedies.

“Are you contemplating getting a second booster for COVID-19? Check out my SkepDoc’s Corner at Skept Inquirer to find out why I say your decision should be a resounding ” she wrote in a post.

After her passing, many speculated that the Covid vaccination played a role in her sudden death.

Back in 2021, Dr. Hall announced that she received her third dose of the Pfizer COVID vaccine.

“My husband and I (both well over 65) just got our third dose of COVID vaccine. The Pfizer vaccine is free at Safeway for everyone. Very convenient and only a short wait. No appointment needed.”

“The antivaxxers are a loathsome, despicable group who seem to be able to plumb the deepest levels of depravity to push their agenda. Harriet had been in delicate health for many years before the Covid-19 pandemic. Several years ago I took over all household chores after she experienced blackouts and fell in San Francisco and at SeaTac within a week. Recently Harriet’s doctor at Madigan Army Medical Center was having her worked up for possible congestive heart failure. A very recent echocardiogram (we have not received the full results) showed she had leakage in two of her heart valves. She also had a transient heart arrythmia which was of many years’ duration. Neither one of us have had Covid-19 and Harriet’s exposure to life outside the home had for the last several years, been limited to visits to her doctor and dentist.”

Atheists for Liberty is deeply saddened to hear about the death of “SkepDoc” Dr. Harriet Hall. Dr. Hall was an advocate of science, truth, and skepticism. The world of science, atheism, and skepticism has lost a tremendous inquiring mind.
