Earlier this month, the #Lancet published an article estimating that the total number of Palestinian #civilian #deaths caused directly and indirectly by Israeli attacks since October 2023 could be nearly five times higher than the official #death toll, and could reach “up to 186 000 or even more.”
It noted that “this would translate to 7.9% of the total population in the #Gaza Strip.”
According to the piece, the latest available count of Palestinians killed – 37,396 – is far too low, based on the fact that it is still unknown how many more lie under the rubble, how many are #missing but not accounted for among the #dead, and how many will perish due to #starvation, #dehydration, or #diseases.
“Even if the conflict ends immediately, there will continue to be many indirect deaths in the coming months and years from causes such as reproductive, communicable, and non-communicable #diseases,” it noted.
However, even this Lancet estimate of nearly 200,000 dead might be only half the actual number of Palestinians killed, according to some counts.

RSF’s [Reporters Without Borders] notorious funders [National Endowment for Democracy, Open Society Foundation, etc] explain why it cherry picks or inflates its reports. The borderless organization has lines it won’t cross. It reports a grain of truth but otherwise whitewashes the crimes of Israel and Washington.

Many Palestinian journalists in Gaza have received death threats from officers in the Israeli army precisely due to their status as journalists. And many of those threatened have subsequently been killed, along with family members, when Israeli airstrikes targeted their homes or places of shelter.
We also have the precedent in prior wars (in 2009, 2012, 2014, and 2021) of Israel bombing Gazan media buildings (including one I was in in 2009) with varying severity, damaging and finally destroying two major media buildings in 2021. This is clearly intended to stop the flow of reports from Gaza under Israeli bombs, and so is the killing of journalists.

I never had the chance to meet the legend, John Pilger, but hugely respected his courageous journalism.
May his soul rest in peace.
John was very supportive to my colleague and dear friend Vanessa Beeley, and to myself, particularly when we were under constant assault from legacy media.
In the few conversations we had, he was extremely humble and kind.

In all of my travels I've met good people around the world, everywhere, but Palestinians are some of the most loving and generous people I've ever met. And I'm thinking back to Gaza and to Nablus and to areas where they've been enduring horrific abuse, systematic abuse, by the Israeli army and illegal colonists, and they're still so loving.
