Suchir Balaji, a former OpenAI researcher, was found dead in his San Francisco apartment in recent weeks, officials confirmed to CNBC.
Balaji left OpenAI earlier this year and voiced concerns publicly that the company had allegedly violated U.S. copyright laws in building its popular ChatGPT chatbot.

A 26-year-old former OpenAI researcher, Suchir Balaji, was found dead in his San Francisco apartment in recent weeks, CNBC has confirmed.

Balaji left OpenAI earlier this year and raised concerns publicly that the company had allegedly violated U.S. copyright law while developing its popular ChatGPT chatbot. "The manner of death has been determined to be suicide," David Serrano Sewell, executive director of San Francisco's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, told CNBC in an email on Friday. He said Balaji's next of kin have been notified.

The San Francisco Police Department said in an e-mail that on the afternoon of Nov. 26, officers were called to an apartment on Buchanan Street to conduct a "wellbeing check." They found a deceased adult male, and discovered "no evidence of foul play" in their initial investigation, the department said.

News of Balaji's death was first reported by the San Jose Mercury News. A family member contacted by the paper requested privacy. In October, The New York Times published a story about Balaji's concerns.

"If you believe what I believe, you have to just leave the company," Balaji told the paper. He reportedly believed that ChatGPT and other chatbots like it would destroy the commercial viability of people and organizations who created the digital data and content now widely used to train #AI #systems. A spokesperson for OpenAI confirmed Balaji's death.

"We are devastated to learn of this incredibly sad #news today and our hearts go out to Suchir's loved ones during this difficult time," the spokesperson said in an email. OpenAI is currently involved in legal disputes with a number of publishers, authors and artists over alleged use of copyrighted material for AI training data. A lawsuit filed by news outlets last December seeks to hold OpenAI and principal backer Microsoft accountable for billions of dollars in damages.

"We actually don't need to train on their data," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said at an event organized by Bloomberg in Davos earlier this year. "I think this is something that people don't understand. Any one particular training source, it doesn't move the needle for us that much."

The Dead Internet Theory

This theory first appeared to surface on the Agora Road's Macintosh Cafe forum in 2021, when a user by the name of "IlluminatiPirate" started a thread called "Dead Internet Theory: Most Of The Internet Is Fake." Citing posts from major online discussion forums like 4Chan, the theory posits that non-human bots are responsible for the majority of online activity and content creation.At a top level, the concept is that bots automatically and rapidly craft things like social media posts that are algorithmically tuned for engagement — effectively farming clicks, comments and likes on platforms like Facebook and TikTok. This is because more interactions and engagement can lead to more advertising revenue.

But beneath the surface lies the more insidious notion that the accounts engaging with such content are also bots and AI agents — meaning that all this activity is happening between machines alone, with no human interaction. An even deeper layer to the theory suggests government organizations are even using bots to manipulate human opinions.

This is proposed as a conspiracy today, that its already happened, at scale. Well, to me it sound too dramatic and not current reality. However, I do see this as a possibility in the future, at a grand scale, total dominant scale, if Artificial Intelligence or Artificial General Intelligence is let loose. Think of millions or even billions of self generating AI bots spreading across the web, invading social media and the comment sections of every website. Duplicating websites or creating own websites, hacking and writing algorithms that bends the web to their own purpose, at a speed and timescale you can't even comprehend. It would be easy to imagine a web where humans will feel alienated to be in, even cast out or locked out. Its conceivable that at some point we would need to create a new physically separate internet 2.0 for humans only.

The “politician” in particular is characterized by a feigned lack of interest and one-dimensional thinking. There are only a few peoples and cultures, actually only two: “us” and “them”. Yana Hell - a fetish model and friend of mine from Moscow - was in Ossetia in the Caucasus at the weekend. A meeting place for ancient peoples. In Ossetia, the city of Dargavs lies on the slopes of Mount Raminyrakh, where hundreds of ancient corpses lie in small towers. The city was only abandoned in 2002. Many Russian soldiers #captured in Kursk Oblast battles, Ukraine's state project claims

Among the captives are both conscripts and contract soldiers, according to "Khochu nayti," the project launched in January 2024 by Ukraine's military intelligence for relatives of the #Russian military captured in Ukraine.

"There is also information about the #dead whose bodies were not taken away by their comrades-in-arms during the retreat," the statement read.

The project published drone footage of what it presented as 32 captured Russian soldiers, adding that eight more did not fit into the frame. The Telegram post did not specify whether this was the overall number of Russian troops captured so far

Earlier this month, the #Lancet published an article estimating that the total number of Palestinian #civilian #deaths caused directly and indirectly by Israeli attacks since October 2023 could be nearly five times higher than the official #death toll, and could reach “up to 186 000 or even more.”

It noted that “this would translate to 7.9% of the total population in the #Gaza Strip.”

According to the piece, the latest available count of Palestinians killed – 37,396 – is far too low, based on the fact that it is still unknown how many more lie under the rubble, how many are #missing but not accounted for among the #dead, and how many will perish due to #starvation, #dehydration, or #diseases.

“Even if the conflict ends immediately, there will continue to be many indirect deaths in the coming months and years from causes such as reproductive, communicable, and non-communicable #diseases,” it noted.

However, even this Lancet estimate of nearly 200,000 dead might be only half the actual number of Palestinians killed, according to some counts.

A Russian #fishing #trawler was hit by a missile during Russia’s #Baltic Fleet military exercises, killing three and injuring four others, a relative of one of the dead men claimed to the Russian TV Rain on March 21.

After the incident, which reportedly occurred on March 19, Russian authorities blamed it on a fire onboard the “Captain Lobanov” boat and said only one person had died, TV Rain reported.

“When the survivors were taken away, everyone knew perfectly well that three people had died and everyone knew perfectly well that a rocket had hit,” the relative said to TV Rain.
