Socialhome.Network as a searchable federation archive

The Socialhome node https://socialhome.network/ is both widely federated AND searchable by non-members. It displays both posts AND profile pages even to non-members, which is NOT the case for Diaspora* pods.

If you're looking for specific content from a now-defunct pod, Socialhome may be able to turn that up for you.

You can search for a specific profile by the its handle, e.g., dredmorbius@diaspora.glasswings.com or dredmorbius@joindiaspora.com, for my present and now-defunct Joindiaspora profiles, using the site's Search feature.

My (now-offline at origin) Joindiaspora profile appears as:

https://socialhome.network/p/702b2f0c-0f8f-4e17-b308-24a43f9ebed9/

Note that the profile GUID is NOT the same as it would be for my Joindiaspora profle itself (d8210c0de509264f`). The Diaspora* GUID can be used to construct a URL visible from the Diaspora* Pod you have an account on and are logged in to, but not as a globally-viewable third-party-accessible URL. Socialhome solves this problem.

That is, if you are on Glasswings, this URL links to my Joindiaspora profile:

https://diaspora.glasswings.com/people/d8210c0de509264f

But if you're not, it won't. Glasswings users might try a different pod such as Diasp.org:

https://diasp.org/people/d8210c0de509264f

Instead, third-party visitors are presented with a log-in / registration page. Socialhome solves this problem specifically.

There may be additional features / API apparent at the Socialhome GitLab repo: https://git.feneas.org/socialhome/socialhome

Noting that that is a FENEAS URL, also likely to go offline in the near future, GitHub:

https://github.com/jaywink/socialhome

Limitations

The downsides to Socialhome seem to be that:

  • References to content and profiles does not follow Diaspora*-assigned GUIDs. That is, there's no automated way to refernece a specific post or profile.
  • I'm not seeing an obvious way of exposing a JSON abstract of posts or profiles --- the Diaspora* trick of appending .json to the end of a URL does not work, and I'm not seeing a JSON abstract in the raw HTML. There may still be an API.

Photos are displayed but appear to be served from the original host, not separately federated. Once the origin host goes offline, photo links / embeds will be broken.

It's not clear how widely or deeply content is federated, though some should be better than none.

This option was brought to my attention by @Isaac Kuo in comments here.

Joindiaspora Migration / Exodus Planning / Discussion Thread

Given the announced imminant FENEAS disbanding, this is an on-Diaspora location for discussing migration and planning.

FENEAS announcement (archived): https://web.archive.org/web/20220110004117/https://git.feneas.org/feneas/association/-/raw/master/comms/dissolving-the-association-2022-01-09.txt

The announcement includes numerous discussion channels for the FENEAS team, none of which I believe I have previously used.[1] Those include Matrix, Discourd, and GitLab, amongst others. Most or all of those channels will also be shut down on the process of the FENEAS dissolution. There is an IRC channel on Libera: irc://irc.libera.chat:6697 (TLS)

For those on Reddit, there is an announcement in /r/plexodus: https://old.reddit.com/r/plexodus/comments/s06kz4/joindiasporaorg_will_shut_down_1_march_2022/

I'm offering this as a place to discuss moving off the now-doomed #Joindiaspora pod (https://joindiaspora.com).

Notes:

  1. Despite its many limitations, Plain Old Email and a publicly-accessible web archive remain the most-accessible and universal standard for communications.

Joindiaspora.com will be shutting down 1 March 2022.

The instance is my own primary Diaspora instance

Announcement:

There's a Diaspora discussion here: https://joindiaspora.com/posts/f605e81053c3013ae6b9002590d8e506

I've posted an announcement to ArchiveTeam's subreddit here: https://old.reddit.com/r/Archiveteam/comments/s05wk0/federated_networks_association_ry_dissolving/?

And there's an HN discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29868837

I'll be making my own plans shortly. Among those is assessing whether or not I want to remain on Diaspora* itself ... it's been useful to date, though slow development and dissatisfaction with existing features have been a concern. I may be approaching podmins for hosting.

I would like to note that federated and self-hosted services do run on the backs of volunteers, and that resources and interest are finite. I've tried to do what I could to support these, though I've long felt my contributions were insufficient. Reach out to your own podmins and see what support they could use. And recognise that even coordinating love and support is itself a task requiring overhead.

That said, I have ongoing presences at:

The GitLab lair will eventually be activated, I promise. https://gitlab.com/dredmorbius/lair-of-the-id.git

I'll probably try to wind down much further activity here soon. Hopefully I can continue at a new location.

I'll also be attemtping to archive as much of my own older content as possible at the Internet Archive.

If you're on JoinDiaspora, request an archive of your content NOW

This is under your Profile -> Settings -> Request Profile Data

(I anticipate high demand for this service, if not now, then soon.)

Hello JoinDiaspora

there is some unfortunate news to share. Feneas will be dissolved and as Joindiaspora is one of the services.
JD will also be shut down on 1 March.

This is unless we can find someone who wants to take over the service.
If you think you can handle the task please contact us via hq@feneas.org.

You can find the original post below or via https://git.feneas.org/feneas/association/-/raw/master/comms/dissolving-the-association-2022-01-09.txt

Federated Networks Association ry will be dissolved

Due to recent lack of activity within the association, issues maintaining the current services and lack of new committee members wanting to step up, the members of Federated Networks Association ry (Feneas) have decided to dissolve the association. The decision to do so was done as per the rules of the association in two Annual General Meetings held no more than 30 days apart. You can find the meeting logs via the below links:

What happens next?

  • The current committee will start to send out service closure warnings to all users using the current services.
  • The timeline of shutting down the services is as follows:
    • Discourse (talk.feneas.org) will be shut down on or soon after the 1st of February (UTC morning time).
    • Friendica (friendica.feneas.org) will be shut down on or soon after the 1st of February (UTC morning time).
    • The following services will be shut down on or soon after the 1st of March (UTC morning time). This includes:
    • Matrix (matrix.feneas.org), Element client (chat.feneas.org) and the various bots
    • GitLab (git.feneas.org)
    • Searx (searx.feneas.org)
    • Etherpad (pad.feneas.org)
    • Nextcloud (cloud.feneas.org)
  • Before turning off the Matrix homeserver, all local users will be deactivated, parting them from all the rooms they have joined. This will start happening on the 1st of March (UTC morning), with the homeserver turned off a few days after the process ends.
  • JoinDiaspora (joindiaspora.com) will inform soon separately about the situation for that service via the official podmin@joindiaspora.com account.
  • WeDistribute (wedistribute.org) are Fediverse Party (fediverse.party) will be announced once the stakeholders for those services have been contacted fully. They are expected to re-own their service for their own hosting, but if that doesn't happen, the services will shut down on a date agreed with the stakeholders.
  • All remaining data will be destroyed on or soon after the 1st of April. This will include backups. Some exemptions will be;
    • membership details will be kept until necessary by law (date to be cleared)
    • financial details will be kept until necessary by law (date to be cleared)
    • the public repositories of the association on the GitLab instance will be mirrored on GitLab.com. These can be found from https://git.feneas.org/feneas
  • The feneas.org domain will be handed over to standing committee vice-president Lukas Matt as agreed in the 4th January AGM. A static website will be hosted there to give details on what Feneas was and what happened to it.
    • The Matrix homeserver server key will be securely stored should the homeserver ever need to come back online. All other homeserver data will be destroyed.
  • Once all the services have been ramped down or moved over, and data destroyed, any accounts left over will be closed and the association will be terminated in the Finnish associations registry.
  • As agreed in the 4th January AGM, if any funds remain in the Feneas bank account (possibly in the amount of tens of euros), they will be donated to Framasoft.

So long and thanks for federating

As the Feneas committee president and founding member, I want to thank all the members and users who trusted Feneas over the years. It's been a good and often fun 3,5 years of Feneas. While we managed to create a sometimes vibrant collection of services and attract people and projects from around the Fediverse, ultimately we failed to build a community that would last longer than the amount of time founding members could dedicate a good chunk of their life. For both the main founders (Lukas and me, Jason) real life and other priorities caught up with us, and thus it's time to move forward. It was also clear from the discussions at the end that not enough active community members exist to keep the association afloat. I'm personally happy we did this project, even though it had to reach its end.

Our chat rooms are still active over at Matrix (#feneas:feneas.org) and Libera (#feneas). If you have questions, for example about exporting your data, or just want to say hi, feel free to pop in. At least the main chatroom is going to stay alive after the association is finally taken off the official association registry, so you're welcome to say hi even afterwards.

If you have concerns or questions you can also reach out via email with generic questions to hq@feneas.org or privacy@feneas.org (for privacy queries). You can also reach me via a private message on Matrix at @jaywink:federator.dev.

All the best to everyone!

Best regards,
Jason Robinson

Open letter: #Feneas in the future

Dear Feneas,

It has been almost three years since we decided to found and build this #organisation. In the last few years we have achieved great things and grown as a #community and organisation.

I never expected that we would now have over 60 members (from all over the world). That is great!

Unfortunately, we also have some negative things to report. One big issue is #finances. With the membership fee we can hardly stay online. Originally, the membership fee was only meant as a confirmation for us that a new member is serious about joining. The reality is that we cannot maintain the quality/maintenance of all services with only 60 euros a month. It has happened more than once now that board members have had to pay bills out of their own pockets.

What makes it worse is that 60 euros is the theoretical number. In practice, we are chasing members every year to pay the recurring fee. We are way behind in our payments.. again...

That's why we decided to start an annual #fundraising #campaign. We have hundreds of users every day. I am sure we can find some support here.

Keep Feneas alive by making a contribution! Because the only other option would be to shut down the services or even to shut down Feneas :\

Feneas Donorbox

Thanks and keep federating,
Lukas and the Feneas Band

#Joindiaspora and #Feneas

I guess most of the JD users already saw the label on the left sidebar

talking about moving JD to a public organization. Well tonight its finally done!

Feneas agreed on helping the joindiaspora community and I finally managed to make the whole infrastructure accessible to the team:

What does that mean for you?

  1. Definitely faster reaction times on Emails! In future you can send your request directly to the association
  2. A bigger admin team.. ready for your support case \m/
  3. We did a bit of housecleaning and managed to save some donation money

I am pretty happy about this step especially because it brings more stability to the infrastructure

and removes the single point of failure: me ;)

If you guys want to talk about it or are curious what Feneas is all about checkout the:

Hi,

the rsync job died over night. That's why #joindiaspora is still #missing a lot of #pictures.

Don't worry, they are not lost! They simply need more time to be copied over. As you can imagine JD has a lot of them.

Yesterday we moved everything related to JD to a single dedicated node. This is related to the #feneas merger this year. We are still waiting for the Annual General Public Meeting to get the green light on certain things.

I'll keep you informed,
Lukas
