For Google Plus users only: A Walk Down Memory Lane.

Five years ago today, Google commenced the shutdown of Google Plus. The process took several hours as different geographic regions of the world went dark, one after another.

Here is a blog post with screen shots of what our beloved social networking platform used to look like.

Meanwhile, in Musk-ville....

While Elon Musk succeeded in receiving several days of ridicule after apparently sharing his "big news" of debates over Hunter Biden photos, as being (in his quirky head) some sort of new Mike (Pillow Guy) Lindell conspiracy theory, and/or his only 'big reveal' was him.

I posted this on Twitter, where I may not be welcome any more.

The story is about Mastodon, getting 10,000 new members per hour / 1/4 million new users this one day.
So that's a function of the Twitter exodus, and many celebrities, journalists, etc. are joining, quickly getting 1000's of followers, and often posting things like "I really lie it here! Bye bye bluebird..."

Not preaching anyone "here" to give it a look, as this is a nice, serene, spot, familiar people, easy to share & format, bla bla.
You now that. But I share this for those who rather like(d) Twitter, but can't be there now amid the hate, racism, disinformation etc.|

Remember the #GooglePlus Exodus? (I do for sure). Thousands fleeing Twitter on principle, or from disgust at what has happened.

Socialhome.Network as a searchable federation archive

The Socialhome node https://socialhome.network/ is both widely federated AND searchable by non-members. It displays both posts AND profile pages even to non-members, which is NOT the case for Diaspora* pods.

If you're looking for specific content from a now-defunct pod, Socialhome may be able to turn that up for you.

You can search for a specific profile by the its handle, e.g., dredmorbius@diaspora.glasswings.com or dredmorbius@joindiaspora.com, for my present and now-defunct Joindiaspora profiles, using the site's Search feature.

My (now-offline at origin) Joindiaspora profile appears as:

https://socialhome.network/p/702b2f0c-0f8f-4e17-b308-24a43f9ebed9/

Note that the profile GUID is NOT the same as it would be for my Joindiaspora profle itself (d8210c0de509264f`). The Diaspora* GUID can be used to construct a URL visible from the Diaspora* Pod you have an account on and are logged in to, but not as a globally-viewable third-party-accessible URL. Socialhome solves this problem.

That is, if you are on Glasswings, this URL links to my Joindiaspora profile:

https://diaspora.glasswings.com/people/d8210c0de509264f

But if you're not, it won't. Glasswings users might try a different pod such as Diasp.org:

https://diasp.org/people/d8210c0de509264f

Instead, third-party visitors are presented with a log-in / registration page. Socialhome solves this problem specifically.

There may be additional features / API apparent at the Socialhome GitLab repo: https://git.feneas.org/socialhome/socialhome

Noting that that is a FENEAS URL, also likely to go offline in the near future, GitHub:

https://github.com/jaywink/socialhome

Limitations

The downsides to Socialhome seem to be that:

  • References to content and profiles does not follow Diaspora*-assigned GUIDs. That is, there's no automated way to refernece a specific post or profile.
  • I'm not seeing an obvious way of exposing a JSON abstract of posts or profiles --- the Diaspora* trick of appending .json to the end of a URL does not work, and I'm not seeing a JSON abstract in the raw HTML. There may still be an API.

Photos are displayed but appear to be served from the original host, not separately federated. Once the origin host goes offline, photo links / embeds will be broken.

It's not clear how widely or deeply content is federated, though some should be better than none.

This option was brought to my attention by @Isaac Kuo in comments here.

Thoughts on conversation-generative online discussion platforms and features

I've become increasily aware of how conversation medium and participants shapes the "quality" of conversation.

Conversation scales poorly.

It's also fragile and very easily destroyed, discouraged, or dissuaded.

The biggest issue I find on Reddit itself is that there's no notion of "thread (or post) as conversation". And absolutely no support for same. Reddit is where interesting conversations go to die.

An item is posted. It's at top-of-page for ... a few minutes or hours, possibly days ... then vanishes And no amount of activity within a thread will boost it, generally. Even those who'd participated in the discussion have no signal of any activity. The best that can happen is that members might subscribe to replies for two days. This is madness.

Put another way, Reddit's post-weighting algorithm is all but entirely determined by posting time, not activity recency. This avoids "necroposting", for both good and bad. For small niche discussion, all but entirely bad.

Problem is that Reddit's scale spans about 6-8 orders of magnitude -- subredduts of < 10 members, to > 10,000,000. One-size-fits all ... wears poorly. Most of the glaring problems are at large scale. The small subs get neglected. Clue flees.

The little-lamented Imzy had the problem of seeing Reddit's problems-at-scale, whilst utterly failing to grasp its own failures-at-inception --- no scale --- and failing to address those. Put another way, how you get to scale, by solving the problems of inception, teaches you nothing about hoe to survive at scale. The problems are entirely different.

As noted at HN, for all its copious faults, Google+ solved this particular problem well. Facebook may also (I don't use it). Microblogging platforms (Twitter, Mastodon, Fediverse) at least present individual posts within a thread well, though they seem to uniformly suck at actual threading (see: Threadreader). Diaspora ... kind of does this but was an immensely clunky slow interface for notifications & response.

But yes, as McLuhan said, "the medium is the message". It has profound impacts and influences, most not immediately apparent -- they're emergent properties.

Independent of medium, scale, expressive richness (e.g., markdown, multimedia), latency, arity, ephemerality / permanence, message size, moderation (leaf-node or trunk), culture, founding cohort, exogenous vs. endogenous motivators and incentives (or demotivators and disincentives), editability/revisability, search, organisation and management tools, protocols and standards, and much more, all matter.

I've discussed some of this at the (rather neglected) discussion of social media types and characteristics at Plexodus Wiki, see especially Platform Types and Features and Capabilities.

Hallo,

Google Bashing hin oder her.

How does Pluspora actually compare to Google+

I still have friends on G+ who are going to stay until the bitter end and are convinced they will not find any sort of alternative so I will list some of their concerns about Pluspora.

  1. Concern about data collected, how secure it is and who can read it.

  2. Not able to edit a post

  3. No communities

  4. What happens if the pod just closes or breaks down ?

  5. Where are photos stored and can people access them ?

  6. Can you move a profile to another pod?

  7. The app from the Play store does not work that well so how safe is it to download the dandelion app from F-Droid

  8. Do the existing G+ refugees recommend this place

I have made this post public so hopefully my friends on the other side will be reassured by some of your answers

It is my view that this pod (pluspora) will eventually be the ideal replacement for G+ and even in it's present state has a much better spam control, display, communication and "circle" management system

My First Week..My thoughts

I have been on #pluspora now for a week. Being a #gplusrefugee I , like many of you, experienced a sadness upon hearing the news of the future sunsetting of #googleplus for consumers. I was looking for an exact replacement. I almost abandoned pluspora altogether in my frustration of not understanding its setup, layouts and functionality.i also felt isolated, uncertain and downright humbled. I set it aside and recently decided to give it another chance.
✨?✨
I tried a couple other platforms but they didn't feel like home to me. I decided one day last week to explore pluspora again. Within an hour, I was clicking away , adding hashtags and using the toggle mobile feature. I also discovered many posts, most were very welcoming and filled with great tips for beginners and kind messages. I also noticed some disparaging ones regarding the existing #diaspora* members' disdain for the caliber of people they feared would be flooding over here from #gplus.
✨?✨
For those who have been welcoming #newhere members with kindness and helpful tips, I want to say thank you. You've been a wealth of information for me and others as we are learning the ropes and looking for a new home. For those afraid of the type of people you fear, I say, have an open mind and use that energy to guide and assist us so that we all enjoy coming here together.
✨?✨
I have met some wonderful people here already; ones from gplus that I never knew and new ones entirely. All have been so kind and made me feel welcomed. If you're new and feel lost, you're not alone, hang in there and don't be afraid to reach out and ask questions. I really think this will be my new home when #googleplus is no more. It is my that you will come to feel the same.
I will be on very limitedly over the next couple weeks as I've exceeded my cellular data and my wifi is out. Please understand as I am not ignoring you, I just have limited access ( more like slower than dial-up access), until my plan renews.
Have a wonderful day and a great week
Thank you,
Mia Dees

I’m #newhere and pondering what will replace #gplus for me. Interests currently include #3dprinting #opensource #linux #fedora #machining #ev #electricvehicle #electriccars #photography β€” Also I'm a lapsed #pilot still interested in aviation. I'm also @mcdanlj@mastodon.cloud and u/mcdanlj β€” I don't really know where I'll end up in the #gplusexodus yet.

I like not having an arbitrary 500-character limit, and markdown is a plus. But finding the signal in the noise is a bit of a challenge here right now. Maybe it's the current influx. Also, really will matter where people and communities I want to interact with end up.
