Dutch startup Nuwa claims to have invented the world’s most advanced smart pen that writes on plain paper
Nuwa plans to launch the device this March. The Groningen-based company today announced a fresh cash injection of €1.5mn to boost the development of the product, which uses an inbuilt camera system, motion sensors, and algorithms to capture text written on paper.
Nuwa is targeting the product at people who still enjoy writing with a pen and pad, as the device writes on plain paper using regular ink cartridges. So, it is a fully normal writing experience.
To digitise the text, the system uses three tiny cameras with 2mm x 2mm sensors. All the data is then processed directly on the device. It exports to PDF, SVG and more formats will be announced.
So, like my previous post today, many will wonder where the data goes. Does is export directly from the local device/app to where you want it, or is someone watching the cameras? If I point my pen at someone, will it take spy photos? We’ll probably only know more of this detail after the device has been released and tested by others.
Their website’s privacy policy does though state that they collect and process personal information in strict compliance with Dutch law (i.e. EU laws). This is stated as personal sales and contact information, not the data that you produce with the device.
But with its normal price being US$373 it’s possible also that it pays for itself through the sale of the device, and not the sale of the data.
The Nuwa Pen does not require a subscription to work. However, the optional subscription (priced at $2.99/month) covers the costs associated with advanced features like Augmented Notes and Text Conversion, and this will likely require data to be passed to a cloud service for processing. So, it’s important to note that what you are getting locally is merely a digital scan of what is written. The subscription cost covers any conversion to text.

Good to see there is still effective competition for Amazon. The main improvements though to this model seem to have been around the stylus, from how it attaches, charges, and annotates.
Along with the Elipsa 2E, Kobo also announced the launch of its own take on Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited, the Kobo Plus service, in the US today. The three-tier subscription grants members access to over a million ebooks and hundreds of thousands of audiobooks starting at $7.99 per month.

Byrna is a proudly South African less-lethal CO2 powered handheld personal security device, with zero license waiting periods
Yes, the current waiting period for firearm licenses in South Africa now exceeds a year (it used to be around 3 months), and this largely defeats the whole purpose of people wanting to defend themselves and their families.
South Africans are great though at finding solutions to sticky problems, and this product is one such example. It’s not cheap at R6,000, but it certainly seems to tick all the boxes:
* The CO2 cartridge (standard paintball size) is only pierced on the first use, so will remain ready for use for a very long time.
* The projectile is a standard 68 calibre, so you are not locked into the supplier.
* It comes with two easy-loading magazines each holding 5 projectiles, which also are used to release the CO2 cartridge.
* There is a variety of choice when it comes to the choice of projectiles.
* In most cases this will be non-lethal (unless you hit someone in the eye) which is re-assuring to many users.
* No recoil also gives many the confidence to aim straight.
I see it is available from a variety of outlets across South Africa. There are also a number of alternatives on the international market from around $380 (just look out for a CO2 system that only pierces on the first trigger pull).
Note that although the unpierced CO2 cartridges last indefinitely, unused projectiles need replacing between after 3 to 5 years. A pierced CO2 cartridge is good for about 24 hours or 21 shots.

The device supports a magnification of up to 1600 times and can take photos and videos using a 2MP camera. The microscope connects to a computer via USB and is detected as a webcam, which means you can use webcam software to take pictures and videos.
It also has calibration that makes it possible to accurately measure the dimensions of small objects, like pixels on a screen.

Apart from monitoring battery charging temperature and percentage overnight, it also helps prevent charging my iPhone continuously to 100% while I'm driving and have it plugged in for Apple CarPlay to operate.
