Highway Code: 'Dutch reach' rule change to Highway Code welcomed | BBC News

A method known as the "Dutch reach" is to be introduced to the Highway Code in the UK after years of campaigning.
The practice is used widely across Europe and encourages people to open vehicle doors with their opposite hand to avoid injuries to passing cyclists.

I'd like to see the wording in the Highway Code. I imagine it's probably just a recommendation. But considering how many lives could potentially be saved, it can benefit non-European countries, too. Oh, and it doesn't just mean the driver; it means everyone in the car. I saw a mobility-impaired friend knocked to the ground by a taxi driver who parked on the wrong side of the road and then opened his door without looking. Luckily, she didn't have to go to hospital. And there could be bikes, scooters, and pedestrians on both sides of the car.
