Social media tales, Cont'd
Just to be more complete in terms of "what's out there" now, accommodating the mass-migration from #Twitter and its #MuskVirus hate and #disinformation love.... I've now pretty much absorbed/settled into what is #Mastodon - the 'chosen one' for many in the journalism and academics fields, and among those basically socializing/commenting/'following'. Now I've turned to post.news which is being favored by many writers, journalists, and literary bloggers.
Sample of Post.News : #Caturday
My take: While Mastodon is rather clunky in terms of formatting (i.e., none really, other than images, and links w/o thumbnails), it has an increasingly large (and still well-mannered) base now, a lot of learning still going on while some (e.g., George Takei) are just all over it already. OK, it fills a need, though not with the massive #'s of a centralized behemoth such as Twitter was/is.
Post is still in beta but has a growing user base now too, especially as I said, writers/journalists. It allows long-form, and has an editor with a few options: bold/italic and centering/justification. Lovely clean interface, a bit unusual, but basically a navigation pane and big area for display. I think posting a link opens a preview image, as I'm seeing some (have not posted anything yet). Seeing both articles (running the gamut, from "How to survive holiday stress" articles to humorous music and Instagram-like memes. But also some "serious writers" and technicians sticking to their interest areas. Plus they give you some seed money (I got 50 somethings) to give "tips" to worthy posts &/or buy premium articles. I'm not sure how that all works and suspect others don't either. (Like Brave browser? Voluntary credits for seeing ads in their case.) Ad free, feed is rather thin without many contacts at first, though there is an "explore" feed options which is well populated. Good ol' George Takei has beamed up too, and says he enjoys it.
But most important: On Saturday/Sunday, there are #cats! See the link above/below for a sample of Post.news today.
🎄Merry Christmas / Happy Chanukah (end) / Happy New Year ahead! Enjoy all the options for online connection/interaction/'stuff'.
