Drivers of social #influence in the #Twitter migration to #Mastodon
Lucio La Cava, Luca Maria Aiello & Andrea Tagarelli

..."The first finding of our study is that the only structural factor that was consistently associated with an increased
is the sparsity of social connections. This is somewhat unexpected, because it contradicts the conventional understanding that close social proximity, characterized by high clustering and dense social connections, leads to faster and broader adoption of new behaviors53. We propose two non-exclusive explanations for this counter-intuitive trend. Firstly, the discussion surrounding the #TwitterMigration phenomenon competed with numerous other topics vying for the limited attention of Twitter users. The prominence of #TwitterMigration in the overall discourse might have been more diluted in denser follower networks54. Secondly, the incentive to migrate may simply be proportional to the fraction of a user’s friends who have already migrated, and such fraction increases more rapidly in networks with fewer social connections.

Our second finding is that communities engaging in more frequent discussions on the #TwitterMigration topic exhibited higher
. We interpret this result in the light of theories linking the rapid emergence of consensus to the influence exerted by committed individuals, even when they constitute a small minority19. While this intuition is grounded in strong theoretical foundations20,55, empirical support has been limited56. Our operationalization of commitment, as a simple and straightforward measure to quantify the level of engagement in discussing a specific topic, contributes to validating the underlying theoretical framework.

The third and final finding of our study is that communities in which the influence process unfolded more rapidly are those whose discourse frequently emphasizes a shared identity and engages in substantial exchanges of factual knowledge. Extensive research in social psychology has established a connection between psycho-linguistic aspects of social interaction and successful, spontaneous coordination22,23,24,25. In particular, the Identity Theory posits that cooperation can be facilitated through cognitive mechanisms that foster a sense of belonging to the same social group57, suggesting that identity may be pivotal in overcoming social dilemmas involving coordinated behavior that entail inherent risks or a non-zero cost of action58. Moreover, the exchange of truthful, factual information has been identified as a prerequisite for constructive debates and, ultimately, persuasion59."...

A big shout out to those arriving or coming back in the current wave of #TwitterMigration thanks to the latest #TwitterMeltdown . Things will feel similar but different. Feel free to ask questions of us #fediverse old hats. We have some tools you didn't see on other places, like Spoiler/Content Warning titles so you can do things like talk about the latest episode of a TV show without worrying about people being pissed since they didn't see it yet. We make it easy to add ALT text to photos for people who need it. It takes a bit more work to get your stream started, by doing things like searching on and following hashtags and then following accounts you see using them. Once you do you are guaranteed to never have some black box algorithm shoveling crap posts at you for extra clicks. You have total control over your experience here because this isn't about milking you and your content dry for dollars. It's a network built and run for the users by the users not some VC investors and their techbro operators with delusions of grandeur.

just an FYI to others reading the thread

The masses moved to mastodon, but quote posts are available via misskey, calckey, friendica and there may be others

Calckey is working on importing posts from mastodon, but right now you can export your posts and import them to a new calckey instance

/Addendum: I forgot to tie all this back to QTs, but it's actually very straightforward. Black, Hispanic, and Asian content creators use QTs liberally to offer context— there were several episodes during the November/December #TwitterMigration waves when the request for this must-have feature were met with categorical rejections. That, combined with the micro-aggressions and overt racism on here, erased any perceived upside and drove many away.BlueSky, for all its flaws, got the QTs right /XX

The thing to remember about working for sociopathic narcissists, people who fancy themselves messianic figures, etc. (essentially the Silicon Valley Tech Bro archetype that we've been lionizing ever since Steve Jobs) is that no matter how much you kill yourself, debase yourself, compromise your values for their grand vision, you are ultimately expendable and will be tomorrow's garbage as fast or faster. They will have extracted their "value" and left you to fend for yourself with your reputation tarnished. That whole Machiavellian maneuver not only isn't frowned upon, it is held up as the most responsible behavior on the part of these people and their worshipers.

Zoe's Tweet reads: "Wow the layoffs last night included a ton of surprises. Hardcore Musk loyalists (more on that soon…) and the founder of the newsletter platform Revue that Twitter acquired in 2021."

Anyone who has been on the fediverse for more than a few years knows how these waves go. This one was the same just so much larger and with a larger bump in plateau. But we also knew this is how the tech press was going to cover the inevitable slump because they only know how to cover Silicon Valley techbro pitches which only understand a false dichotomy of “unicorns”/ “going to the moon” or “dying” for not doing so. The fediverse is not one entity much less company. I’ll take the wins and keep moving forward. I like being the underdog anyway. Best bright side is the VCs chasing the new shiny ball will maybe leave us alone and go back to doing their vulture capitalism play elsewhere. Unfortunately that may be to try to make fetch happen with crypto and NFTs again. #fediverse #TechMedia #slashdot #VultureCapitalism #Twitter #TwitterMigration
Screenshot of a Slashdot post title: “The Mastodon Bump Is Now a Slump” with description reading:
The fall in Mastodon's popularity suggests the decentralized platform is not a replacement for mainstream services. An anonymous reader shares a report: Twitter users put Mastodon usernames in their handles and trumpeted their migration. The new traffic knocked many Mastodon instances, or servers, offline. In less than two months, Mastodon's monthly active users climbed from 380,000 to more than 2.5 million. But not everyone stuck around.
Mastodon's active monthly user count dropped to 1.4 million by late January. It now has nearly half a million fewer total registered users than at the start of the year. Many newcomers have complained that Mastodon is hard to use.

I don't block or hate on anyone sharing things from #twitter, because people who were here before the #twittermigration have no idea how barren it was of content and sharing ANYTHING created engagement and made this place a better place. Prior to that it was mostly just tech people talking tech to each other. Diaspora probably had the most non-tech content being posted at the time. Many are still in that pre-migration mindset and will take a bit of time to break that habit now that more great things are here to post and we don't actually need twitter anymore.

Look, anyone even remotely paying attention knew that Musk's "moar freeze peach" thing was sheer greenwashing *at best*. Now the Mastodon Twitter account has been suspended. There is no reasonable explanation for it. Even in the worst turf war days the social networks had accounts on respective platforms and integrations too. I imagine the Twitter->Mastodon bridges are going to be coming down any day now too. #MuskIsADick #TwitterMigration #Twitter #birdsitebans #BillionairesShouldNotExist

The number of people promoting Post.News today is really disheartening. Marc Anderesson's group helps Musk buy out a platform and turn it abusive and ppl flock to another company funded by the same group. Noam, the founder of Waze, is the founder of post.news. Noam sold Waze to google who is now dismantling it. Who will Noam sell the new network you form on post.news to?

Accidentally tripped across this user count graph post from April 2017. There was some surge going on at that point but I don't know why as it was before my time here by a bout a year. It peaked at 8,000 per day. Per. Day. Even as things have quieted down we are adding that every 2-3 hours still. Good Times. #TwitterMigration #mastodon #fediverse

Twitter really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement

The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.

For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).

"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.

There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.

It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.

Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.
